My God. It is burning like a torch.

So horrible to watch the massive fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Perhaps flying water tankers could be used to put it out. Must act quickly!

The spire has fallen. It is looking like it might be total building destruction.

The roof is timber under copper. It’ll be at least the second re-do...the first was in the 19th Century to repair damage from the revolution.

    Its truly a terrible shame!

We're about a mile away. Smoke in the air. I'm reminded of this photo "The Crying Parisian" . This is part of their national soul.

    Terrible. Probably a catastrophic accident.

The cathedral is undergoing renovations, I wonder if the cause of the fire can be traced to this work. Maybe a faulty extension cord or power outlet.

A shame to see a great structure go though, it could have been made into a museum dedicated to the suffering of the children and women who have been defiled by the church leaders.
Then he/she would have struck St. Peter’s.

If only he'd been there, he'd no doubt have run up the stairs to the roof with a fire extinguisher in each hand.

    Jeez

...addendum...Sorry, I see I was gazumped in my thoughts by the drugs thread.

So classy of you to use this tragedy, where lives might have been lost, to spew your hatred of God and His church. Please go away. This is not the place for it.

Horribly sad. First went to mass there in 1987, on my honeymoon with my deceased wife.

Looks like the entire building is gutted. I wonder if the stone walls have been weakened by the heat to the point they can't be saved.
But, let's be optimistic. Cathedrals in Europe were heavily damaged during WWII and rebuilt.

Notre Dame is so much more than just a Catholic church. What a shame.

Wife and I plan several days in Paris in June prior to a Le Boat cruise on the Canal Du Midi long with a group of the Rockford Power Squadron.

Jim Bow will certainly have something to talk about for a very long time when his trip is over.I don't doubt they will rebuild eventually but fire takes away such a lot when it strikes a place with so much history.

The scaffolding appears to be on fire now, and there are reports flames in one of the bell towers.

Notre Dame is a treasure of the human race, not just the Catholic Church. Shame on anyone who would use this tragedy to score some cheap and hateful points.

I agree with others here. In spite of my lack of love for religion, this is no time to use this as an attack. Notre Dame is part of all of us. The architecture, art, the organ, the historical relics, this is a huge loss for the world.

I could be wrong, but I believe very few of them were rebuilt. I will go back and check
