Default World music...for the want of a better title

I've been exploring music other than my usual search for songs from my past or my interest in UK folk/celtic...as in Irish.
Anyway here's a sample of what I've been finding on Youtube.

Translates as Octava. This is the first song of theirs I came across and wanted more.

Two tracks from the Transatlantic sessions that got me going was this Joan Osborne track.

Thanks Sayed. We in the “West” sell ourselves short when it comes to experiencing what the world has to offer.

There is a lot to be found in world music........

The kvaš from the Faroe island have roots goind back many centuries. The text usually tells a story. I find them very interresting and also great to listen to when winding down a stressed brain.

This one deals with a part of the saga of Sjur
šur (or Siegfried) the dragonslayer. A legend from the time when the huns invaded central Europe and the Roman empire collapsed. Preserved in oral tradition to this day.

This is a part of Sigmunds kv
ęši which tells about the introduction of christianity to the Faroe islands from a sligtly ironic heathen perspective sometimes mocking the new christian chieftain appointed by a king far away. Also preserved in continous oral tradition:

A similar tradition did also exist on the Shetland islands but almost all the songs were lost when the Shetlanders lost their Norn language and started speaking English.

The Transatlantic Sessions are some of my favorite videos. There are some by Mary Chapin Carpenter that I especially like.

Sounds like a tweed cloth working song.

I just love the variety of instruments...not to mention the skill in playing them.

#23 is also about a very brutal situation, which given the beauty of the voice and music makes it rather powerful in my mind.

    THIS IS MY LAND
This is Timbuktu, my home land,
Where the children are mourning from gloom,
This is my land, Timbuktu «the Maliba»,
    The land of love,
    The land of warmth,
    The land of dignity,
    Here is my Nation...
    Why are we crying?
    Why are the children crying?
    Why are the young crying?
    Cause of unfairness,
    Cause of violence,
    Fearing the future...
    Here is my home
    Stop crying
Cause no matter what, Timbuktu will remain

The room didn't look very big for the amount of people and gear in there.
