Coq au Vin originated as a way to get the bird drunk enough to slaughter.

6000 birds on 5 acres... The fox probably smelled them from two miles upwind.

There is a genuine Filipino expression, “As brave as a chicken”. Since there is also a TV channel devoted to cock fighting, you can see why.

Nah, that is just male testosterone driven stupidity. The fighting cocks as well.

Someone here told the story of watching a hawk attack one of his hens, and the rooster killing the hawk within seconds.

    Pretty crazy stuff.

The second that hawk lands, he loses 2/3 of his mojo.

So a flock of chickens is now called a mob? A gang? A pack?

The best statement I've seen from this latest carnage came from a student who lived through it -

    Don’t forget this bombshell..

    https://www.bbc.com/sport/cycling/47483219

A cycling club made up of adult entertainment workers has lost its British Cycling affiliation - after the governing body said its name might damage the sport's image.

PPCC, which stands for Porn Pedallers Cycling Club, raises money and awareness for sexual health charities.

"We are what we are and proud of what we do," founder Chris Ratcliff said.

British Cycling said it was offering "constructive advice" to the club to help it meet regulations.

That would be quite the rooster. I haven’t seen the bird that could take a hawk. What breed was it?

No idea, George, but a hawk on the ground is not the threat it is when airborne.

My cat cornered a hawk on the ground and it rolled with it's back against the trunk of a tree with it talons out and ready. The cat was game but no match for it.
I put on my welding gloves, shooed away the cat and rescued the Hawk. It was a mess of wet and broken feathers, but after an hour in a dark, quiet and warm place (cardboard box) she flew away, noisily happy.
Note* this was a very small hawk, a Kestrel not even the size of a pigeon. I wouldn't want to mess with our resident Coopers hawk. He stands atop the power pole behind my barn several times in the week and watches for an opportune lunch, the look in his eyes is death.

This goes back several years now, but I think he was a rhode island red. They have a barred rock now, but I think he came after the hawk incident.
(it's a total hodgepodge of a flock, she adopts birds from all sorts of situations)

Had a friend with a turkey farm. Thousands of birds. Went to visit and we were walking among them and his advice was, "Don't fall down. I don't think I could get you out fast enough."

We regularly have golden eagles (I know where one nest is. They look like osprey nests.) and, during nesting season, bald eagles in the yard, and we have a pair of nesting sharp-shinned hawks near by.

All the chicken around here live in what appear to be tiger cages, and I do worry about the cats.

Doggo, though, doesn't let ANY bird near the yard, and I'm SURE she's a match for any ten raptors. She is a big, strong Doggo...

^ I have a feeling that 90% of the missing cat posters I see in my area are the result of bald eagles.

I've watched wild turkeys from a blind - and one the 'leader' goes down from a shot, the other turkeys all attack and peck/stomp the crap outta them. Didn't know the domesticated birds did that, too.

Saw a falcon grab a squirrel in my backyard - and finished it off, on the ground. Very quickly, efficiently. So I'm still impressed by the idea a rooster could handle a hawk, which presumably is a larger bird. I have handled wounded hawks, gingerly, wearing gloves. Cover the head - the beaks, and the claws, are remarkable, and strong.
There's a lot of things they didn't tell me when I signed on with this outfit....
