There is going to be Chebacco, and it has a junk rig.

    Should be another interesting year.

For you fellow tracker junkies looking for a quick fix until then the Everglades Challenge starts tomorrow. Looks like nice weather for the start. josh Collins o a SUP and I think roger Mann is in some kind of spaceship/single handed tri thingy but I just had a quick look and dont see him in the confirmed column.

    Cheers,

a freakin paddlewheel on a mac 26. That is so wrong so many ways I think it is glorious. Sadly the Chebacco is not going to make it this year.

Seriously, does Jake Beatty not know the difference between this MacGregor 26:

    And this MacGregor 26?

It has started, tracker junkies unite! Good live facebook feed from the dock and the WoodenBoat forum even posted. Cool.

I'm bummed there are no paddle boarders this year, the proving ground really took it's toll.

    Go SLAG!

Karl Kruger, whose run to Ketchikan makes him the only guy to date to SUP to R2AK all the way, was dockside in Victoria and answered the question of, “Could he have done it in those conditions?” with a strategy shift. “My plan for that was to paddle from PT to Whidbey Island, portage the three miles to Coupeville, then put in and go up and around the San Juan Islands. It would have added a ton of miles but I would have made it. The weather is different up there—I called some folks and it was flat calm yesterday.”

Karl is also crazy. How else do you SUP all the way to Ketchikan.

Shaping up to be a great tracker watch.

The Ruckus was pretty tame this year, probably due to the cold cloudy evening we were experiencing. At any rate the vendors were shutting down early so we got a jump on putting stuff away and were more or less struck by 2100. I had planned on working later and sleeping in my car to see the start but with small craft advisories/gale warnings posted for the morning I opted to just head home. Walking the docks I could see how far the racers have come over the years, the various pedal drives were a lot less funky looking than the first year. ( well there is one clunky looking paddlewheeler but I suspect they only plan on using it in Victoria Harbor, no sailing allowed). With the exception of team Funky Dory who were still working at getting 10 pounds of stuff in their 5 pound sack the racers were pretty much bedded down by 2130.

"The Guider" a CLC product looked very interesting too.

I was not that excited by another sailboat race, but the Savo Finnish lake rowing double is right up there so far. I will hope for the wind to die

Savo are Finnish. Where did the Norwegian lake rowing boat disinformation come from?

certainly watching the Wee Free Men,

R2Ache (paddle wheel drive) didn't get far yesterday. Looks like an upwind slog to the narrows for whoever can get through the first tide window.

R2Ache is taking a break so that one of the crew can fly back to Ontario to get a PhD. Then back this weekend to resume racing.

starting to look like a restart for the first two groups at the narrows, going to be very close for the three in the lead.

Angry Beaver's tracker isn't updating. Not even a tail slap to give off their location.

Now they're updating, and the tracker shows them in the lead -- but Pear Shaped Racing hasn't updated in seven hours.

It's frustrating trying to follow what's going on. I recall tracker issues from previous races, was hoping that wouldn't still be an issue.

Tracker now shows Team Sail Like a Girl in the lead, but both Team Angry Beaver's and Team Pear Shaped Racing's trackers haven't updated for many hours. Super frustrating to follow when you can't tell where the leading boats are.

    Angry Beaver wins!

This race would have been a lot more fun to follow if we had some idea where the boats were most of the time.

The favorite, the trimaran foiler Pear Shaped Racing, was foiled itself by deadheads.

    From the R2AK commentary:

The obvious came in log form—Pear Shaped Racing hit four, not small and not slowly. The worst was on the last night and brought them from nine knots to instant full stop. “I thought we went aground. It instantly shook everything loose in the cabin.” More than the stowables, it made a boxer’s nose out of the bow of an ama and jarred loose what was left of their electronics, leaving them to fly their high twitch bird blind for the last 100 miles. The log was every bit of huge, spanning all three amas and lifting the boat high and dry before it chose to roll under.
So wave piercing hulls do have their drawbacks. On the other hand, that's one tough boat to be able to continue sailing.
