Default one for the frozen train buffs

switch heaters on the chicago METRA system
these prevent the switches from freezing shut and also prevent extreme cold from forcing bolts out of their holes. . .

Simpler is better, except when complicated looks really cool.

Saw this frozen train pulling about 75 ore cars up through Rhinelander a couple years ago.

I have a 1936 Ford truck with a box containg 2 of those as roadside emergency warnings! When I was first learning to drive they were known as "smudge pots".

I earned a certain reputation as a college kid working a summer job on the highway department. I could blow one of those things out.
