Actually, Ian, that last is quite inaccurate. The US does not have the highest poverty rate among OECD countries, nor the highest inequality, nor the lowest life expectancy, nor the highest infant mortality. We have plenty of problems, but still . . . And quite a few others are population-dependent; it would be very surprising if the US didn't have more children in poverty than counties with a couple of percent of our population. Some data here.

Thank you Keith. I'd not remembered the OECD membership. The meme does not, that I could see, identify what nations we're being compared to. I imagine (but too lazy to check) that we're being compared to Western European industrial democracies and perhaps other nations of that general culture. It's claimed comparisons for propaganda value..

On the flagpole in the cartoon it says 'Among OECD Nations'.

My poor eyes and lazy glance did not even see words there. Thank you Keith. We have enough problems without falsifying the message. The facts that some points are true and that most of the false ones have nations too embarrassing to stand near is not enough. We liberals should at least get and give truth. This meme and Keith's truth telling are a good lesson. Again, thank you Keith.

Yeah, the facts are enough, and make a far more effective argument. Given how wealthy the US is, we ought to a LOT better. But some of the countries that do worse than the US in those comparisons aren't bad places at all; Chile, Costa Rica, even the UK in some cases.

Not entirely. Firearms need massive regulation/control, no doubt. But there's something else happening and it's being ignored.

It will take a grandfather or more to educate them in anger control.
By all means get on with it, but can you wait that long for it to possibly work, when dealing with guns may only take a year or so, if the will is there.?

Please note, I, personally, am in complete agreement with the need for firearm control incl training, testing (skill & aptitude), storage and yes, restrictions for many and a flat out ban on public carry 'for protection' etc. Police should also not be allowed to carry openly. Locked in a trunk for the very few times 'needed' should suffice.

My point, the meme's point, is there is (also) something else going on and it is being ignored. But yes, it will take forever to change.. esp as it's being ignored.

Not at all. It points out an entirely valid issue - that it is mostly men.

Of course more needs to be done

A modest proposal re #1425: restrict ALL private ownership and use of guns to those with two X chromosomes. Heavy penalties for anyone with a Y chromosome caught with a gun.

    Yeah, yeah, I know . . .
