I salute the Tarrant County Republican Party for re-affirming Shahid Shafi as Vice President of the county GOP. He is a good man who is doing a good job. And we should never allow religious bigotry to play any part in our politics.

Texas is still offended that slavery was taken from them. Slavery was illegal in the Mexican territories until...

The Section 9 of the General Provisions of the Constitution of the Republic of Texas, ratified in 1836, made slavery legal again in Texas and defined the status of slaves and people of color in the Republic of Texas.[29]

    • People of color who had been servants for life under Mexican law would become property.
    • Congress should pass no law restricting emigrants from bring their slaves into Texas.
    • Congress shall not have the power to emancipate slaves.
    • Slaveowners may not free their slaves without Congressional approval unless the freed slaves leave Texas.
    • Free persons of African descent were required to petition the Texas Congress for permission to continue living in the country.
    • Africans and the descendants of Africans and Indians were excluded from the class of 'persons' having rights.

The following year all those who had been living in Texas at the time of independence were allowed to remain. On the other hand, the legislature created political segregation; it classified free residents with at least 1/8 African heritage (the equivalent to one great-grandparent) as a separate category, and abrogated their citizens' rights, prohibiting them from voting, owning property, testifying against whites in court, or intermarrying with whites.[30] As planters increased cotton production, they rapidly increased the purchase and transport of slaves. By 1840 there were 11,323 slaves in Texas.[24]

Isn’t that illegal to do according to the constitution regarding religious freedom?

Yes, but religious freedom is not one of the parts of the Constitution RWWs like... for anyone who isn't Christian, anyway.

What are you doing about it?

While it's shameful that 26% of these Texas Republican officials are such racist jerks, it's heartening that almost three quarters that being an urbane Republican physician trumps (as it were) being Muslim.

A lot of Muslims are pretty conservative. The conservative immigrant vote is aggressively courted by our national Conservative Party, and is probably the main thing that keeps them in contention for power. It's probably just as well that the Republicans don't discover their strategic error.

    A very good example.

Seems odd that the only part of the constitution set in stone is the 2nd.

Most Hispanics are as well. They are everything the Conservatives value. Church going, family oriented, hard working, entrepreneurial.. unfortunately they are not white

In a very few years the Republican Party, if it re-emerges from the Trump sewer, will be Hispanic and likely Muslim and the rump of the old guard will likely get rolled quite suddenly as demographics, voters and membership change. But it also may be that the current sponsors and lobbyists will find themselves somewhat out in the cold for the same reasons.

And you'd think that there would be some intelligent conservative strategists in the US who would realize this, and seize upon it as the obvious solution to their party's demographic decline. There probably are, but they've been entirely ignored, and instead the party has gone full throttle with know-nothing xenophobia, working as hard as they can to ensure that no one who isn't Christian, and no one whose ancestors ever lived in Asia or the Spanish Empire, will vote Republican for a generation at least, maybe two. Although I certainly don't object, it's strange to see a political party commit suicide. But maybe trying to return to an imaginary past where the US was great and homogeneous and white and Christian is too seductive. And it does provide some short-term results, for all seems like it will be disastrous long-term. Much of politics is not driven by rational calculation, obviously.

back when I was in school long ago, I often pondered how political parties could just "vanish" in a few short years. The Wigs come to mind here. Watching it in action, I have gained a whole new insight into things I learned so long ago. While we may be doomed to repeat history due to our lack of understanding it, I am glad to see it in action and I am glad that enough people remember Fascism to keep that from taking over again.

If they'd managed to push him out based on him being more loyal to his religion than the country it would set the stage for the ousting of many Republicans. Starting with Pence.

In theory Bad Cargo has a logical point. But Republicans have abandoned logic just as they have abandoned facts. And, as a number of quotes show, they are really all in for "christian" supremacism.
