Default Oops! Paddle Steamer Maid of the Loch - Video

Workers had to flee to safety after the Maid of the Loch paddle steamer broke free as it was being winched out of Loch Lomond.

The 65-year-old ship was being taken from the water ahead of restoration work when it slipped its ties.

Members of the restoration team were forced to run from the side of the vessel as it slid back into the water.

It was then taken back to its normal berth at Balloch Pier and the operation called off for the day.

Checks are now under way to ascertain what went wrong.

At least she stayed on the cradle. Could have been seriously damaging if she slid off of that.
It really is quite difficult to build an ugly wooden boat.

Simpler is better, except when complicated looks really cool.

Yes, I imagine the paddles and housings would be quite vulnerable if she fell over.

Not to mention bottom damage forward should she drop off the back of the trolley onto the slip.

Needed a stronger bit of string for the haul-out.

I could see guys dodging and scrambling to avoid being run over by the cradle. Wire whiplash happens so fast you don't get a chance to dodge, if you are in the way your anatomy is severed.

I'd like the chance to take another trip on that boat - standing on the bow you could feel every revolution of the engines.

I was at a railway launch where the cable broke. The uphaul cable was 2:1 and the downhaul 1:1. The very old - due to be replaced the next week and the cable spool was at the yard - uphaul broke just as the trolly had left the level and was aimed downhill. It's possible that the downhaul was still actively pulling, not just reeling in.

Anyway, a "runaway" on a railway is rarely a problem. The trolley's on the rails and the boat is supported by those high braces that are part of the trolley. Even if the boat herself is a bit unstabile if the stern's getting afloat and the bow is still on the front supports, there's no place for the boat to go. Not like the occasional very large boat trailer launch that can go badly - like that big Pacific Northwest roll-over we discussed a year or so ago. There are some yards that let the trolley roll down the rails unrestrained, which on a steep way is really cool.

There is somewhere on the internet a perhaps preWWII launching of a fameous yacht where somehow the trolley timbers failed and the boat fell over as it reached the water, but such things are very rare.

The runaway I saw was more like a walkaway as the slope was not steep and everything slowed down as the trolley ran into the water.

She is a very pretty little ship, and would be nice to see her get fixed up,

There are two kinds of boaters: those who have run aground, and those who lie about it.
