Need a place to go on Tuesdays or Thursdays or maybe Saturdays? The Foss Waterway Seaport (http://www.fosswaterwayseaport.org) is a nice place to hang out and use tools, powered and otherwise.
The Balfour Dock is the last of the Great Northern Railroad warehouses left from the early days of Tacoma. It was here that cargo made the transition from sails to rails.
The huge wooden structure was restored and is owned by the City of Tacoma with the proviso that it store and display a collection of Northwest small craft. It's also stipulated that a working boat shop be located on the premises.
Volunteers build boats, the occasional work bench, museum display equipment, maybe teach a woodworking class.
A great place to meet likeable and creative folk, some from within the boatbuilding community, and some - like me - have never built a boat before.
C'mon down, take a look, have a cuppa, and see if it interests you.
Have a great new year.
