fillers and caulking joints

I have questions on two things: I need a filler to smooth out gouges and imperfections in the bare cedar strips, and I need a caulking to go between the keel and the garboards(-? right term?) The wide boards that are against the keel.

I also have a spot that the cedar ripped apart when I was removing the fiberglass layer. At the most, the depth of that patch will have to be about a 1/4". Do I use the same filler to patch this area?

After I get these two things completed, it will be time to order the Kirby. I've just about decided on the "see red" for the bottom and sides.

Hi, I use Evercoat formula 27 filler it is a two part polyester general purpose marine filler. As for sealer I have had the best luck with Rule products. Both are available from Jamestown supply. Charlie

A great an inexpensive wood filler is a little sawdust from the wood you are using and fiberglass resin. Mix it into a paste and apply. It comes out the same color of your wood in most cases.

I'd say about the worst thing you can do to a wooden boat is put polyester resin anywhere on her, thickened with sawdust or not. The polyester resin does not stick well to wood, particularly wood that has had anything else on it.

I'd stay clear of epoxy fillers as well. Expensive and not particularly any better than solvent based fillers. I'd use basic Interlux fairing compound if you are painting ("Kirby's," as you say.) As for your garboard seams, use cotton and Interlux or Z Spar or Petit's underwater seam compound. Simple as that.
