#1 that monster genoa seems an odd choice for a singlehander.

I wonder if that mess mucking up the transom is electric propulsion or is it some crazy primitive electric power generation?

The monster genoa goes with the coffee grinders, of course. She was intended for a crew of twelve. Since the winches would not have been self tailing, I am wondering what Tabarly did to deal with that.

The thing on the counter is the self steering gear of course.

The thing that gets me is the size of the fore hatch...

if the thing on the counter is self-steering, what's the bronze/brass looking bit on the end?

The half-acre fore hatch is necessary with that ten-acre genoa!

I've been looking at snaps of her. She hasn't got it now! I was figuring it for a pendulum servo. but indeed it could be a water generator. On looking carefully at this snap, however, I think it's an emergency rudder, because that tiller on the aft deck is in a very odd place to be an emergency tiller for the main rudder...

I can just about cope with the Nic 55's forehatch, which is somewhat similar but scaled down to the 55 ft /16.7 metre LOA boat.

how can this boat be safely handled by one person?

Mechanical leverage and powered assistances are one things but safety is another.

That is an attempt at an justification. Frankly a very weak one uttered by those who dare or dream to do it.

they have to go to sleep sometime and there are many things between them and snug harbor. Most who succeed are lucky as well prepared.

Can it be a servo WITH a small water generator in the end?
It's a big boat for any kind of self steering gizmo.

Whew! For a moment there I thought the anniversary thing and maybe the bathroom project had brought it all crashing down. BTW there is a woman sailing solo around Australia at the moment. She's already sailed around the world. In a boat set up for it of course. Whole different ball game to the OP.

Perhaps you are unfamiliar with Eric Tabalry. He was eventually lost at sea on another boat, but he had a full crew with him that time.

We all fear Poseidon. There is no need to call him sooner than we have to. As for crewed and solo... a proper crewed boat in good order is far more secure. For every Eric that gets lost with crew there are ten that are lost falling off the boat when they are alone.

J Madison - you are quick with a viewpoint. please explain what is a proper watch on deck when a vessel is underway and why that is possible sailing solo over great distances nonstop.
