Glen L15 - refueled

Bought this 1985 boat 4 years ago. Supposed to be my sail/row/motor boat..... but turned out that I like to use it as a motorboat. Still would like to be able to use it as a sailboat in some distance future though. She was put together without any bright finishes....that's what I would like to change.
There is some delamination on the transom and transom area that need to be addressed. Would like to strip the paint, paint the hull, install new transom and decks - bright finish. Coamings were never installed - that's also on to do list.
Designer recommended outboard 1980 7.5 HP is strong enough to get the boat on the plain - with 2 people and the right tidal current. I am upgrading to 1977 15 HP long shaft, with remote controls. So need to install the controls and control linkage.
Last part of the project: build removable seats for two people - 1/2" marine plywood.

I can get almost half the boat out of the shop - I like to do sanding/cutting etc, outside. Would be nice to be able to roll it out completely......

Casters on my cradle allows a complete roll out. Trailer winch bolted to the shop floor hauls her back inside.

You have a great set up Mo - boat is pretty cool too.
Installed temporary 2x4/2x6 planks and boat rolls out of the shed John Have an access to tools etc now.
Took off most of the sailing hardware.

Wanted to remove nails, but the idea to drill off the nail head didn't worked out......and the tool to drill the plywood around the nail - to remove the piece and then remove nails - didn' worked out either - at least for today. The tool inside diameter was exactly as the nail head diameter - broke all teeth on one end of the tool, as I was trying to push it over the nail - broke teetch on the other side while drilling...….
Still want to try the drilling trough the 1/4" thick decks in order to save the piece as the template.

got 3/8 screw remover + 2 screwdrivers + chisel + nail bar......it's working....slow but steady wins the race :-)

Tedious work, but I think that's the way to go - if not for the template - then for removing the deck without destroying the rest of the boat. I have to say that the boat was build very well, still in good shape 32 years later.

thanks Huntmarlin, some progress today......broke yet another $16- screw extractor.....
PO used plywood in place of lumber....carlings are made out of plywood - not 5/8 x 2" lumber. I will leave it in place - no point of re-doing everything. Plan calls for 1/4" mahogany for coaming, I may go with 1/4" marine plywood instead...…

Those screw extractors can be frustratingly brittle. I ended using a plug cutter for more consistent results.

Amazon Jim! Yes, they are brittle - if I had my Monoset tool and cutter grinder, I could grind new teeth ....I think they would work great in drill press -

tried Wizbang way to get the screws out - have to say that it worked very well!!

Decks are peppered with nails - found faster way of removing them - drill every nail with screw extractor ( broke another one ), then pry them off - and remove nails. Much faster!!

using an impact wrench to undo screws that are set in epoxy/glue/etc. An impact brakes the adhesive first and then gets the screws out without stripping the head.
I just saw this in another thread a few days ago and give it a try.
This is going to be my preferred method from now on

Carlings are 5/8 x 2 1/4" plywood. Plan calls for coaming 1/4 x 2 1/2 out of mahogany. I think I will use 1/4 ply - just like the decks.

plans are calling for coaming without any support in "semi circle" area. My boat has a support there made out of 3/4 ply, that is coming a part. I want to have a support in that area for the coaming and the deck...….have some AYC for that

Good work. Wish I had seen this thread sooner. They make a specific device for pulling nails and small screws. It works a treat.

thank you johnsandusky and ben2go...….found slide hammer on ebay for $23- ……….didn't know about this tool, I think would work great on my application and would save me a some money too.
Winter WA weather got to me and as a result not much got done.
Started working on support for circle part of coaming support. Had some old cedar fence board laying around and made this - more or less to try the idea....but I may just use the fence board for this project...….3 boards glued together here with a wood glue.

need to decide on battery location.....also do I need to make some strength modification to the transom??
Transom is 3/4" ply, nailed/glued to last frame, I did add 3/4" oak pieces - top and middle of the transom.

the deck frames are out of whack, need to fix that before can proceed any further.

Starting again......thinking of using SS #14 x 3/4 nails to fasten plywood deck to the frames, copper nails will rust.
