    Stephen Hawking's final scientific paper has been released, and it deals with one of the central topics in the physicist's 56-year-long career.
    The work was completed in the days before Hawking's death in March.
    It tackles the question of whether black holes preserve information on the stuff that falls into them.
    Some researchers had believed this information was destroyed, but others said that this violated the laws of quantum mechanics.
    These laws propose that everything in our world can be broken down into information, for example, a string of 1s and 0s. In addition, this information should never disappear, not even if it gets sucked into a black hole.
    But Hawking, building on the work of Albert Einstein, showed that black holes have a temperature. And because hot objects lose heat into space, black holes must eventually evaporate - disappearing from existence.

    "It was very difficult for Stephen to communicate and I was put on a loudspeaker to explain where we had got to. When I explained it, he simply produced an enormous smile," Prof Perry explained.
    The new paper shows mathematically that the entropy of a black hole may be recorded by the particles of light (photons) that surround the black hole's event horizon. The event horizon is a boundary, or point of no return, where escape from the gravitational pull of the black hole becomes impossible - including for light.
    The patina of light around the black hole has been dubbed "soft hair". "What this paper does is show that 'soft hair' can account for the entropy," said Prof Perry.
    But he added that : "We don't know that Hawking entropy accounts for everything you could possibly throw at a black hole, so this is really a step along the way."

    My lack of understanding of higher physics makes me feel so humble.

    The one thing that everyone knows who's ever heard of a black hole is that nothing even light... but isn't heat part of the electro-magnetic spectrum and therefore, light, and so the heat of the black hole, must be retained inside the halo of photons that think they want to leave, the hair.

    If light, photons, which have no mass, can't escape from a black hole, inside the boundary of the event horizon it must be bright as the big bang. Probably hot as a mutha, too. More crap gets close and falls to land on the solid mass of the black so-called hole, and all the light from a given falling object shines back toward Earth, but all of it shining down, would get hurry-upped right onto the surface of the mass, from whence nothing, etc.

    Did you think that when all that mass coalesced by gravity until it was so massive that it's gravity sucked in everything, including light, that it would then be somehow dark and cold inside the boundary layer. How many black holes should there be if they bleed off heat, and how many if they really don't?

    Is this covered adquately in the thousand pages of the scientific knowlege thread, already?
    I don't care to know what the tough do when the going gets tough.

    I am interested in what the enlightened do.

    Some of Hawking's most significant research has been around black holes. The formula for the temperature of a black hole – the Hawking temperature – is inscribed on the memorial to the great scientist at Westminster Abbey.
    Having provided the theoretical framework for this temperature in 1974, Hawking and other physicists have been working to align this idea with the fundamental laws of classical and quantum physics – laws which state you're not going to get anything back out of a black hole once it's gone in.
    It's formally known as the black hole information paradox: how black holes might simultaneously wipe all information from an object and yet also retain it. Confusing, huh?
    And that's where this "soft hair" comes in, first proposed by Hawking in 2016: a way of explaining temperature and entropy shifts so that it fits with what we already know about how the Universe works.

    Well there is Hawking Radiation. Radiation created at the event horizon that leaches energy from the Black Hole.
    It really is quite difficult to build an ugly wooden boat.
