Default Looking for info on the 26' Lunenburg Dory, Wild Rose Chance.

    Hello All!

I'm merrily making arrangements to take over the stewardship of Wild Rose Chance, a 26' Dory built in the late 70's. In the early 80's 'Rosie' was converted into a cruiser. Harry Bryan added a deck, cabin and sailing rig. Local New Brunswick artist, David Umholtz was her most recent care taker. He passed away a few years back. I've heard the boat referred to as a Seine dory, and a Banks dory.

Now I'm looking for any information about Rosie that might be floating around out there. David kept her at Deer Island, New Brunswick.

From the size and hull configuration I would agree that it is a seine dory, but beyond that I cannot be much help. Have you contacted The Dory Shop in Lunenburg to see if they have any pertinent information?
Hope for the best, but plan for the worst.

Congratulations! She's come a long way from Lunenburg! Will we get to see her at Port Townsend in the future?

Handsome! I sailed a 19' yawl rigged dory for a while, fun and seaworthy.

Found out it's the largest dory they make at the Dory Shop in Lunenburg. Next mystery, how does the tiller work?

Do you have the tiller & rudder?

Here's a pic of the rudder. I don't have the boat yet. I will in a few weeks. And I hope to talk to Harry Bryan who installed the rig.

I found an old thread that had pics of my old Dory Shop built Seine Dory. Tiller/rudder combo was a kick-up affair.

Quite a bit of work done since these photos were taken - the most obvious being the bilge pump has been run through a proper brass through-hull, the battery has been relocated, the bronze portholes have been installed, etc.

Here's a shot of the motor well and twin keels-

And one of the cabin from the cockpit floor -

Yessir, that's what you need, right there!

Edward, I suspect that your confusion comes from the thought of how the tiller is supposed to work with the mizzen mast in the way. The solution is probably one of two methods - the offset tiller, which makes the helmsman end into a push-pull operation, like this:

...or, some form of bend introduced into the tiller that takes the tiller around one or both sides of the mizzen mast, like this lovely bit of lamination:

^ Michael, were such dories ever steered with a continuous line run' round the cockpit?

There are two kinds of boaters: those who have run aground, and those who lie about it.

Not that I have ever seen, Kevin, but that doesn't count for much.
