Default 1971 men's eights crew world record.

This sculling oar claims to have been on the boat.. Maybe?

The shape, maker and details look right for the year.

That style of oar blade wasn't in use in the Olympic years of '52-'60 as shown on the oar's decal. I suspect the decals were added on. The colors on the blade would help determine what club the crew was. Then looking up any world records rowed in 1971 might confirm something... or not. The colors, if dark blue and red, look like those of the University of Pennsylvania's which wasn't likely to have set any world records then. But it could be an international crew's colors if they are black and red.

That style of blade was in use in college rowing in 1971. You can ask me how I know that - I rowed for my College between '71 and '74.

Collars supplied all the oars for all the Oylmpic events between 1952 and 1984. Since the list of Olympics on the Collars' decal starts in '52 and ends in '68, this oar was made after '68 and before '72, so the date of '71 may very well be correct. The decal is under the varnish, of course. I don't know what world record time is alluded to.

It seems the Macon blade was adopted around 1959:

"Macon blades achieved prominence at the 1959 European Championship in Mācon when they were used by the West German national team. West Germany won all the male sweep events that year, except the coxless four."

I rowed with a very similar style blade in 1971. Didn't set a world record though.

Could be an oar from Rutgers...right colors. But I can't find any mention of Rutgers men's eight setting a record in 1971
