Default Referring to MAGA, when was America Great?

In that this longing for a golden past seems to be the basis for Trump's whole message, when was America Great? A specific year or decade please.

    How about May 29, 1790?

The day the last state ratified our Constitution... and before we'd had a chance to not live up to it.

It all depends on who you ask. For me, it started being great on July 4th, 1776. She's had her ups and downs and is far from perfect, but she is great and will continue to be.
Australia, in my opinion, is also great!

I was being flip with my answer, but the U.S. has been great a lot. But how great, and in what ways, and when? It's both complex and episodic. They weren't great when they supported the Indian Wars as a way of expansion of their territory. That's just one example, and there are plenty more. They were great when they passed the Civil Rights Act - as flawed as it was in concept and execution. That's just one example, and there are plenty more.

I'd have said something like 1955. American not a war .....officially, the economy humming along. The Cold War not at a crescendo yet ?

I imagine that many Trump supporters think it was before the 1964 Civil Rights Act when the South voted solid Democratic.

Peter, I don’t think it’s worth taking literally. In Trump speak: “Things were bad but now they’re going to be great because of Trump” When things were great or what defines great is left up to the listener, they get to fill that bucket with whatever story of former greatness fits their specific circumstances. Thats the masses job, to look up with expectation and guidance from their great leader.

The US has done some great things, but those things have always been counterbalanced with an equal amount of not so great, the end result being nothing any better than mediocre.

There are some great countries though where the people and the gov't. actually care about their own and the rest of the world.

No answers there either. The slogan definitely implies a specific date or era . Where's one of the Trump supporters, they must know !

this kind slogan may mean to you a specific time or era but that is from a reality based perspective. From the gaslighting Trump it’s meant to resonate with feelings of missing out on the dream and nostalgia for that earlier time where .......(fill in the blank) or (traditional white male hierarchy when accompanied by other rhetoric)

I just had coffee with a very successful Dutch business man.
He was convinced that the Netherlands were great. He talked about economic prosperity, tolerance and liberal outlook. Poverty is less than a quarter of what it is in the USA and the wealth inequality is far smaller. And so on.

I recall a guy in Ireland who kept the mantra that Ireland was the greatest country in the world. I never got to the bottom of why he thought that, but i guessed he was just terrified of travel and found a great excuse to explain why he never left those green shores. Ireland is great by the way.

US greatness is often tied up with big brass band stuff like the contribution in WWII (which was great and welcome).

But Civil Rights - really? Why would a country be 'great' because it stopped institutionalising racism (kinda)? Surely it was a shameful thing to need to do it?

Increasingly, I think it's two things for Trumpists.

First, it's about the Cult of Trump as savior, the "I alone can fix it" line. So America couldn't have been great when the Presidents Trump vilifies were in office. We weren't great during the administrations of the Muslim Obama, the Fake Republican Bush, the Philandering Clinton, and the Really Really Fake Republican Bush Sr.

Increasingly Ronald Reagan is out, and of course Carter, and well, Nixon got impeached so we Best Not Speak of Him he was a RINO liberal anyway, Johnson was a commie and he fought a bad war against Asian commies so he's out, so ... this is why one of our Trumpist forum members has a Kennedy quote in his signature line. So maybe from 1944-1963 when Truman, Eisenhower and Kennedy were in office. No one remembers those losers anyway. Hail Trump.

Second, it is a contemporaneous description of Good America and Bad America. This can be defined by whether that place voted for Trump or not in 2026. Bad America is any blue state, plus all sanctuary city, a margin ten miles wide along the Mexican border, and NFL sidelines during the national anthem. This is basically a call to civil war by Trumpists.

First mistake is buying the premise that Trump knows what he is talking about. He's an idiot and a liar.

I think this question has been asked often, but in different ways.

I once posted the question as when is the last time the USA, as a country, did something you were proud of.

I was quite proud when we put men on the moon and brought them home safely. Prior to that, I'd be inclined to think of how we handled WWII.

Guess I'd put the Civil Rights Act on this list.

I don't know when it was great, but it will be great on January 20, 2021 when trump leaves DC and the messes he's created, and goes back to New York, where he belongs.

Yeah, he's become one of our favourite artists. We went to the UK in May and took in his four-day festival at the Roundhouse, and it was magical. He puts on a great show, comparable to Springsteen so I'm told.
