Sorry if I asked years ago. Any thought on what this is for? An awl? It has a fairly dull point.

Tapered reamer, for taper pins. I have one or two.

Tapered reamer for slightly enlarging holes in metal.

That one will smooth/enlarge a hole in thin stock - but it looks pretty far gone for reaming a taper pin hole. Plus, it's a hand reamer - not chuckable - so reaming for a taper pin would be a laborious process even were it in good shape.

Taper pins are pretty specialized. The taper is small enough that in a reamer you might not even notice it at first. 1:48 for inches, 1:50 for metric
    Pipe taper is 1:16

Yep. While I never was an expert on reamers, one of my long term customers is North America's largest reamer manufacturer (which doesn't make them a huge company ). Having written the system that their company runs on, including creating jobs & job cards, I've become far more familiar with tapers, backoff, relief, etc. etc. than I once was. Been fun learning about 'em - but that's one of the best parts of my job: learning about how different companies run their business & how they make what they make - not in that order though.
