Default I hate to break it to you but we're stuffed…….

Given that humans are unlikely to change their habits in enough numbers to make a difference the likely hood of 2 degrees increase by 2050 is more or less certain. That's tomorrow. And I think it's claimed that advice to Donald says 7 degrees and we may as well enjoy ourselves whilst we can.

It should put everything else in perspective. Sensible humans with a concern for their children's future, our leaders, our politicians…………. but no, they are concerned with the next party bribe and the next election. I reckon that they still think they'll be dead and gone when the stuff hits the fan. Well it already has.
Our scientists have been warning us for decades, our politicians refuse generally to say what is likely to see them blamed for inaction, but I reckon that the disaster is so close upon us that most of the public will also refuse to see it. Even when it's at their door and their children are being pitched into a changed world that their parents have little idea will be like.
The deniers I dismiss, it's mostly ideological and it will happen to their children regardless of their political or religious views.

"The new UN report focuses on the relative harm caused by two potential warming outcomes
    • 1.5C warming will see coral reefs declining by around 80 per cent, whereas 2C would see more than 99 per cent wiped out
    • The Arctic Ocean will be ice-free in summer roughly once every decade under 2C warming, and only once every century under 1.5C
    • Melting ice will raise the sea level 10cm higher under 2C than 1.5C by 2100, a seemingly small increase that will render many islands and coastal areas uninhabitable
    • 10 million fewer people forced from their homes by sea level rise under 1.5C warming
    • Roughly double the number of animals and plants will lose half their habitat under 2C warming than 1.5C"

I can see the sense in that……….. But I doubt we'll die out quite so soon, humans are adaptable………….. our support network maybe not so much.

    perspective:

we're at 7.6 billion souls on this planet right now
more than 1 billion of them do not currently have access to electricity
    they want electricity
about a third of the world's population eats very little meat on a daily basis
that third wants to eat meat
by 2050 the population will be 9.8 billion
by 2100 the population will be 11.2 billion

at some point some self limiting effects will come into play

    famine
    pestilence
    war

    Now history is short,
The sun is but a minor star,
A poor man sells his kidneys,
    In some colonial bazaar,
    Que Sera Sera,
Is that your new Ferrari car?

    Polar ice is abnormal.

    Extinction events are quite normal.

Well we have been holding our own 'extinction events' for some time now haven't we? Australia is in the forefront, and likely before we actually know what we are wiping out.

We aren’t stuffed, our kids will see the decline of petrol fueled activities and some stuffing in other parts of the world, our grandkids will adapt with what we left them.

    Perhaps.

I haven't yet had it explained to me why the warming will stop at 2C or 4C. It could just keep on going because humans are incapable of learning and will continue to burn fossil fuels.

I’m just saying in the life of each individual in each generation there will be a new normal to live life well. If by “we” you mean humanity across the globe we’re totally stuffed and moving towards the oven. It just takes a bit of time.

It's predicted Australian cities are going to start seeing 50 c temperatures, that should thin out the old and the very young.
The definition of stupid has got to be the belief that more guns will negate the bloodshed done with guns.

Agree completely, we’re like yeast with opposable thumbs. What gets me is how we elected politicians who want to accelerate the process by willfully ignoring science and undoing what few attempts have been made to slow the release of CHG. Just can’t say no to more now.

There are Scientific Publishers, and then there are thos that claim to be…………..

"We do not regard it as our job to be “gatekeepers” of thought. We leave it to the wider community to make any decision about the merit of the materials we publish."

So, no peer reviews, they'll publish anything at all.

One of the straws that broke Syria’s back was the worst drought in modern times between 2006-9. The heat extremes you’re talking about will also hit parts of the gulf. The millienalists in Al Qaeda 3.0 shouldn’t lack for recruits.

Extinction events are good for an ecosystem. It disslodges the dominant ecology, and provides opportunities for other species in time. Overall it increases heterogeneity in the broader timescale. It's normal, and in fact desirable, otherwise we would be looking at a sea of Trilobytes.

Life on Earth will go on.

Oh the planet and it's load of microbes and bacteria will be fine, think like a rock etc, the present lot of higher mammals maybe not so. The experiment continues.

So relate that to man's affects on extinction events* in other species and how's that good for ecosystem how is less biodiversity good for an ecosystem or for the possibility of increased evolutionary diversity going forward?

*especially mass extinction events of multiple species

envisioning some future sentient species (perhaps ai even) performing some type of archaeological survey of our society

It would be nice for the species if current science conclusions were wrong, in the short term anyhow. But I think we can stuff the place up quite well on our own.

Be it an asteroid, massive volcanic eruption or burrowing in the ground for sequestered carbon and releasing it into the atmosphere, we were doomed from the day we began to evolve. Something was going to get us before too many millions of years.
