Be safe folks. An old friend runs a Bed And Breakfast in Wilmington, NC. Heís a long time volunteer for the Red Cross. He was a 9/11 responder as liaison between the Red Cross and the Pentagon in 2001. And has been part of every hurricane response since. All the way from Katrina to the one that desvastated Vermont, was that Camille? Anyway, heís not evacuating now as he is donating his B&B rooms to emergency response workers. Heís at 30ft elevation so letís hope the winds arenít too bad.

If Florence reaches inland as predicted, not only will uplands be threatened by flooding but the coastal areas will be facing days of high water. Some members of the rescue boat crews now heading to muster areas for Florence are long term veterans, having done body recovery after the September 11 attack.

    Stay safe.

The rainfall forecast is extraordinary, and 11ft as a storm surge as well.

Just windy here (about 12 miles south of Charlotte) - the rain bands have not hit yet - lots of folks buying generators, and water, bread, ice are in very short supply - I have many flashlights, bottled water and cell phone chargers at the ready..... tomorrow and Sunday will be ' interesting'

Except for a week of very high tides, things are looking ok at the Oysterhouse.

I spent five days doing storm prep. Took the wings off of the airplane and trucked it out of here. Beached the pile driver on a high tide and pulled it ashore with the tractor. Moved 15 vehicles and trailers to high ground. Emptied my shop, house and 6 sheds into storage units on high ground. Cleaned up around three houses and four TV sites. Helped the neighbours prep their houses, and the watermen prep their boats. Hauled several trailer loads of stuff to the dump. Checked the weather updates every three hours (at least). Answered at least 100 phone calls and text from well wishers-------and a zillion other details.

Exhausted myself physically, mentally, and emotionally. Lived with the fear and anxiety that I might just lose----well----everything.

And next week I get to start putting it all back where it was.

And God help me, I'm relieved that Florence didn't nail us. And I feel both sick and guilty to feel that relief while my costal brethren to the south are living out my nightmares.

I'm going to have a drink, and a cigar----- and say a prayer of thanks for my good fortune. And a prayer of relief for those suffering in my place.
Even a fish wouldnít get in trouble if it kept it's mouth shut.

Glad you are OK. Oak trees are very scary with their shallow roots and saturated soil. All the solid oak on my boat came from hurricane Isabel.

    Stay safe.

Mike and family are OK. He did loose two oak trees, and damage to his septic system. Fortunately due to his thinking ahead he made use of a drainage ditch that directed most flood waters into Boge Sound a few miles away. His generators( 2) , some extra wires he was able to supply electricity to two widowed neighbors.. Right now it has stopped raining where he is but the sky is still overcast and lots of wind. Many trees in the neighborhood down, blocking any egress, but Mike has enough food for two weeks. Only problem his gasoline fuel for the generators is limited. Mike said due to bureaucratic screw up some rescue missions were halted.

So folks lets hope and pray things get better for all still in danger.

Thanks folks. It's started to rain again. It looks like there is still some of the outer bands with water has decided to hang around a bit longer some the Eastern portion of the states roads at the river bridges has closed the main access for anyone wanting to return.too. more houses are being flooded , pushing people out with only what they are wearing.. the coast guard has been flying most of the day and transporting people to the hospital. Tom we should be okay unless it continues to rain forty days and forty nights.. The neuse river in particular at Kinston is slated. To flood it's banks and a portion of Kinston in a couple of days from what I have heard.thst takes away one of the major roads for a long time. Sorry typing on little phone and cannot get thing edited the reason for poor written content, more than usual

Mike, if this turns out (or doesn't) to be a long term recovery and you need something to get by with please let me know.
I can tow a boat to striking distance if we need to.

Wilmington, NC is in bad shape - flooded and cut off by flooded roads / bridges . Here in SC, it is a bright, sunshiny day with bright blue skies - go figure !!

Suspected tornado damages 2 North Carolina homes

Two homes in North Carolina were slightly damaged by a suspected tornado, authorities said Monday.
Wayne County spokesman Joel Gillie said the tornado landed early Monday near Pikeville, about 10 miles north of Goldsboro.
Gillie says no one was hurt, but the powerful winds spinning off the remnants of Florence caused major damage to the roof of one home.
