    https://www.theguardian.com/environm...tion?CMP=fb_gu

Global emissions were static in 2016 but the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere was confirmed as beyond 400 parts per million, the highest level for at least three million years (when sea levels were up to 20m higher than now). Concentrations can only drop if we emit no carbon dioxide whatsoever, says Hillman. “Even if the world went zero-carbon today that would not save us because we’ve gone past the point of no return.”

"...gone past the point of no return" is debated by many in the scientific field. However, they agree the problem only gets worse.

I think it's time for my neighbour to build his jetty, do you think 50ft above present sea level is enough?

I think the OP mentioned something about 20 meters. Best think "snorkels!"

In that case we'll build at my place higher up, my creek will be a nice little multi-branch inlet.

To be able to sail the boat home for maintenance would be nice but in temperatures 4-5 degrees above average?

    Oh, no. The East Coast.

Actually, that's not correct. Among themselves they understand the situation, but out in public, not wishing to be the first one to cry "panic", they hedge.

I can't tell you how many lectures I've attended where their caution is fully obvious, but the truth is they either believe or are staving off depression about it.

The so-called scientific method is not designed to produce irrefutable evidence, only to swirl around the hard facts and seek further data. In this case the hard truth is still too hard for most of them to confront.

    But they know.

Given that the changes are now quite discernible you may yet experience some big changes.

If the predictions are correct, and I do not doubt them but hope they are wrong, then panicking the populace is of no help, and in fact could do a great deal of harm. It will be bad enough when the penny does drop. It'd be nice to imagine that humans could handle it,
but I doubt it, there will be anger and chaos.

I sometimes wonder if that is why we have such mind numbing inaction from governments.

What? and admit that there are some thing a politician cannot solve with his party's policies?

No, I reckon that such an occurrence and coming on so quickly is beyond their comprehension. I think if they actually believed then even they would not be so foolish as to waste everybody's time on such petty disputes.
