Default Robot coffee baristas begin to take over San Francisco

I was on my way to work in the financial district - 2 different robot store where open for business. One was at a location and another was working on public sidewalks. It is an ominous sign of getting rid of low wage employees as well as further removing interactions between human beings by design.

The retail space... face recognition software will be used to prep your drink as you walk in.

McDonalds here in Alabama is being retrofitted one by one with kiosks where you order by touch screen. I haven't tried them yet. I still go to the person at the cash register like before and order.

How will investors prosper when too few have too little money to buy much of anything? Can you automate the customers? Three robots walk into a bar. The robot bartender says, what'll it be boys?

Human interaction is part of dining. I'd miss that.

I miss it at the big box stores. If I wanted to push buttons and self checkout at Home Depot I would just go online and buy the same thing on Amazon.

I refuse to self checkout even if I have one bolt and the cart in front of me has a pallet of stuff. I'll wait it because if we all succumb to the self checkout these jobs will be gone. Besides I kinda like talking to people and the transaction is always easier.

So what if you want to order something different, how do you think that facial recognition thing will know, or is it once a double double forever a double double? I guess the no choice thing would be a small price to pay for not going through the meaningless greetings and small talk when you only want a coffee.

I agree! We are losing touch with the people around us. We pay a large price for that.

On the bright side, the robots may be able to afford adequate San Francisco housing

How does the robotised coffee shop differ from a vending machine? I agree with Joe about the self checkouts,I have no desire to be an unpaid checkout operator and would rather see those jobs preserved so somebody else has to deal with the missing barcodes.

I tried one of those in the Sacramento area. The screens are NOT intuitive. It took me three times as long to place my order as dealing with a human. So, I tried it once, and have gone back to the human ever since.

I too will not use automated checkouts, and my visits to McD's are very very rare.

And i will not use an automated Cafe Bar,

Those who do are just yaking another person's job, and in time the same automation may take theirs.

Um - guys? You realize we've had machines to do that for 50 years at least? Has anyone here ever eaten in an Automat?

^ Yep. There were dozens in New York when I was a kid. " Horn and Hardart Automats."

The last one closed about 30 years ago.

How about a holographic robot girlfriend?

"A tech company has launched a virtual girlfriend device which can send touching texts throughout the day asking how you are feeling.Gatebox, the founding company, developed the technology to act as a companion to someone who may be living alone.

The device includes a small holographic robot , which can also be used to control things like lighting timings.
The advert showcasing the technology above, shows a lonely man enjoying interacting with his virtual girlfriend."

I wore one of those stupid smart watches for a couple of days. Very quickly got sick of an electronic device programmed by teenagers congratulating me on how many steps I'd taken or whatever.

I don't get a warm fuzzy feeling from a stressed out couldn't care less barista, spouting lines from the company manual. All I care about is the coffee and the speed of which I can make my purchase.

God help us, an anime character, with eyes three times the size of a normal human being and the body of a skinny eleven-year-old girl. Well, no accounting for taste.

Couldn't agree more. My wife works as a checkout operator at the local Supermarket.
If everyone starts using the self checkouts...her job will be gone.
Oh....shes not on minimum wage and loves her job especially all the people she knows in this small town we live in.

I remember going to the Horn and Hardart Automat as a kid. My mom dragged us kids in to visit my dad at the office. My favorite, though, was ZumZum. Awesome German style hotdogs, too bad I wasn’t old enough to have the beer, too.

I'm quite willing to pay extra for human interaction. I regard those things in the same light as I do automatic checkouts at supermarkets ...... to be avoided.

Given the dretch that some chain "cafes" make, perhaps we need a robot to drink the slop rather than to make it?
