    Default 2018 Mid-Atlantic Small Craft Festival camping/attendance

    Hello,
Having recently moved to Hampton, VA, I'm interested in attending the MASCF this year with my boat and family. I looked up some of the inns and hotels in the area for those dates and they are quite expensive. Is camping pretty straightforward up there? That is to say, my family and I enjoy camping but my wife likes the camping where there are showers and bathrooms available (no wilderness camping for her!) Can anyone comment on the camping experience either on CBMM grounds or in the area to attend the MASCF? We're tent campers but weather doesn't bother us, if that helps folks comment. Thanks and I look forward to ideas/thoughts/voices of experience.
    -Chris

We camped there last year and will again this year. There are showers. Coffee and doughnuts in the morning. The group dinner Saturday night is fantastic.

Quite civilized, but beware of camping near a large group identified as "Team Ruckus."

There is a nice overnight camping trip on Thursday and Friday to Wye Island. A good friendly group but no showers and only an outhouse toilet.

We have always enjoyed the camping there. Close quarters, so earplugs come in handy.

Hope to see some of you there this year -

It's a great time, and nice showers are available. If you are set up for car camping, you will have a lot of fun. This is the type of event if you go just once that becomes an annual. I live in upstate NY (7 hour drive) and wouldn't miss it.

Well sounds like that seals the deal. Thank you all for the input. We are car-campers. Cooler, tent, little grill, 4 year old.

As I live with a person who depends on a CPAP machine, and have found that many of my peers make noises at times I'd rather not be bothered, earplugs are on my Permanent Packing List.

Hope to see some of you there this year
Our second granddaughter is due to show herself toward the end of September, but, if all that goes well, I hope to be driving up from Atlanta!

Also: Thanks, y'all, for the tip on choice of campsites! 'Nuff said.

The space for camping at MASCF is limited and gets crowded. There are no designated individual "sites". Instead you find a space where your tent/trailer/RV fits with the understanding that the space around you will fill up. By Friday afternoon space can be getting tight though I've never heard of anyone unable to find a spot.

I don’t think there will be any problem setting up your hammock:

I think I’ll bring one, too.

Depending on how much rain and storm surge they get from Florence, Hammocks may be a very good idea. The woods can be a bit damp after a foot of rain.

Hello all, introducing myself. I just recently bought a Welsford Pathfinder and I'm coming the Small Craft Festival...arriving Thursday morning to do the trip to Dividing Creek, one of my favorite anchorages on the Bay.

Just wondering if anyone else will be arriving around then and using the ramp in St. Michael's harbor...I've been putting my boat in using a lift, so it'll be my first time putting my boat in the water using the ramp, I'll be by myself and I'd appreciate an extra set of eyes! Looking forward to meeting everyone.

Also please let me know where to sign up to join "Team Ruckus," they sound like my kind of folks.

I guess it does look like a model a bit! The picture was taken from a drone.

I'll be arriving sometime on Thursday and launching from the town ramp as well. Green Coquina "Molly Malone". Will be happy to assist if we cross paths but you will find plenty of willing helpful people at the ramp and at the campsite. It's also usually very easy to get a ride back to retrieve your rig once you've brought your boat around. Camp Ruckus usually sets up on the right side of the driveway (inbound) in the bend just before the parking lots start. Find Howell Crim. He'll likely have his gray Pete Culler launch "Flying Squirrel". Camp Ruckus does go into the night but they're real friendly and always have great food. Your boat looks great btw!

All loaded up, headed out first thing in the morning! Short detour to Sandy Springs, MD, tomorrow evening to see a concert by a great up-and-coming bluegrass band (Mile Twelve, if you want to look 'em up).

Bringing along our 12'4" Burly Laddie (that would be a Rushton Wee Lassie built for us, um, more portly figures).

It's been a few years - at least there does not appear to be any hurricane interference this year!

For those handful who may know Lynn and me, look for us reclining in our Roorkhee chairs under the awning of the Baker tent.

You have a giant anchor holding all those boats, Dave?

Hikingchrs once pulled into an anchorage in Harpswell in his Caledonia Yawl and proceeded to anchor with his 25lb Fisherman anchor in front of three cruising boats all rafted up. After he was done someone from the raft up mentioned that the anchor holding all the other boats was smaller than the one Chris had just set.

I believe they are on one anchor. I'm with the folks in tents. It's raining, not sure who's better off.

I didn't make the Wye river gunkholing trip, just as well I was running late, I had a bit of a leak to handle first. I was also glad to be tied up at the docks when the storm rolled through, though the wind shift at 2am made things a bit rolly for those of us sleeping aboard

sadly, I never made the start of the race. I had a skipper induced rig failure in where I was in a hurry and didn't make sure the sail went through the bolt rope channel. It's hard to sail with a main not even attached the mast. It's a shame, I found out sunday that my little GP is quite a bit faster than quite a few of those boats in some real wind.

It was more of a crapshoot than a race. Fun, though.
