Default US invaded by savage tick that sucks animals dry

A vicious species of tick originating from Eastern Asia has invaded the US and is rapidly sweeping the Eastern Seaboard, state and federal officials warn.

The tick, the Asian longhorned tick (or Haemaphysalis longicornis), has the potential to transmit an assortment of nasty diseases to humans, including an emerging virus that kills up to 30 percent of victims. So far, the tick hasnít been found carrying any diseases in the US. It currently poses the largest threat to livestock, pets, and wild animals; the ticks can attack en masse and drain young animals of blood so quickly that they dieóan execution method called exsanguination.

Key to the tickís explosive spread and bloody blitzes is that its invasive populations tend to reproduce asexually, that is, without mating. Females drop up to 2,000 eggs over the course of two or three weeks, quickly giving rise to a ravenous army of clones. In one US population studied so far, experts encountered a massive swarm of the ticks in a single paddock, totaling well into the thousands. They speculated that the population might have a ratio of about one male to 400 females.

Yesterday, August 7, Maryland became the eighth state to report the presence of the tick. It followed a similar announcement last Friday, August 3, from Pennsylvania. Other affected states include New York, Arkansas, North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia.

Hope the voyage is a long one.

Is there any federal action being taken to slow the spread or find a suitable insecticide?

Maybe systemic, like heart worm injections for dogs.

did the ticks stay at a Trump hotel? Does someone at Mar-a-Lago care about the ticks? will eliminating ticks trigger the libs?

    Another Trump Thread?

    Sorry - a bit obvious.

We get Ticks here, bloody hell. My little dog has had to be anti-venomed twice.
Hind legs go first as the ticks venom paralyses the body from the end of the spine upwards.
Eventually the lungs and heart get paralysed and its all over.

A friend got bitten and is now hyper allergic to red meat. I think the scenario is; the tick bites a possum or roo. the tick egts its blood. When it bites the human it injects some of that blood into the victim causing a defense to kick off in the blood stream. Now everytime you consume red meat your body recognises is as a tick bite and defends against it - aka an allergic reaction.
    It can be extremely severe.
The initial symptoms were similar to Limes disease. She went to Germany and had all her blood boiled.

    Nothing pleasant about ticks.

"People should be able to access these benefits [Social Welfare] as a matter of right, with no more loss of their own standards of self-respect than would be involved in collecting from an insurance company the proceeds of an endowment policy on which they have been paying premiums for years."
Robert Menzies - Liberal Party (Conservative) Prime Minister of Australia.
