Default A hundred years ago today was the Black Day of the German Army

The first day of the Battle of Amiens, in which the Allied armies on the Western Front finally got everything right. A surprise attack achieved through deception, five hundred tanks operating with aircraft and using radio, and the combination of Canadian Australian United States and British Forces advanced several miles, took 17,000 German prisoners and started the collapse of German morale.

A hundred days later, the Great War was over.

It was over in three days.

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Amiens_(1918)

The breakthrough had been achieved. The advance had outrun its support and only four (I think?) tanks were still battle ready. The attack was resumed elsewhere.

What amazes me is that they were using tanks and aircraft, co-ordinating their operations over voice radio.

The Allied armies had made huge advances in two years since the Somme.

Like Andrew said, the U.S. showed up in force in the spring of 2018 and by the end of the year the war was over.

From the dawn of the civilized world, it is always Germania. The Romans. WWI. WWII. How much damage have they done?

And now, once again trifling with civilization itself. Germany never should have been allowed to reconstitute itself in the wake of its defeat in WWII. This was a grave miscalculation by the victors. The West will come to regret enabling a revanchist Germany.

Certainly. But I suggest that there are many in Europe, especially lately, that wouldn't necessarily dismiss the conclusion.

Why should they, after all? Look at the history.

How could it have been prevented without force? Now you're tossing self-determination overboard along with freedom of the press? Germany, the Western Allies protectorate? Gonna need big time NATO and EU to hold the Germans in submission in Camp A and Camp B.

But wait, you're against "internationalism". Because it "infringes sovereignty and people are tired of it and they're going to explode, I'm just saying."

I do not understand this taste for self-contradiction.

Oh, c'mon, Andrew, you have to get into the spirit of the thing. A remark about Spitfires, maybe?

(All kidding aside, I too think Amiens is worth remembering. WWI is considered by many to be the crucible in which a genuine Canadian identity was forged, and the three Canadian divisions at Amiens made the greatest advances into enemy territory - 13 km.)

What are you doing about it?

    This is funny:

The German General Erich Ludendorff described the first day of Amiens as the "Schwarzer Tag des deutschen Heeres" ("the black day of the German Army"), not because of the ground lost to the advancing Allies, but because the morale of the German troops had sunk to the point where large numbers of troops began to capitulate. He recounted instances of retreating troops shouting "You're prolonging the war!" at officers who tried to rally them, and "Blackleg!" at reserves moving up.
Troops developing some class consciousness. Watch your butt, Herr General. The Russians showed it was possible for an army to just quit.

The Canadian Corps under General Currie were considered the shock troops of WW1 and are sometimes given by historians as the inspiration of the German Blitzkrieg of WWII. They (CC) had enough of a reputation that they were brought to this battle front at night time only days before, so the Germans did not know they were about to be hit hard.
Curious that after a war of tranches and massive dying, this being the beginning of the end of WWI they finally shift into a new battle plan of movement...infantry, tanks, aircraft, coordinated in one plan.

Blooie must have realized that there are fewer Germans posting on the WBF than folks from the UK posting, so he has switched the object of his distain in hopes of proceeding without so much blow-back. You go, Ol' Blooie; bless your heart...

I give you one name, John Monash. His plan, his direction. The US troops were new and Pershing ordered them out but Monash 'did not see the orders' and they went in with the Aussies, beginning a long tradition….if you will. The WW2 German 'Blitzkreig' was supposedly based on this kind of coordinated battle planning.

For several decades the US Army has called it "Combined Arms" - Infantry, Artillery, Armor and of course Aviation.

The victors in the wars on each occasion were far too lenient with the Germans. I reject the historical consensus that holds to the contrary. Germany was insufficiently punished on each occasion, and is a bullying colossus yet again, intimidating it's neighbors, impoverishing EU citizens by the millions, deeply dependent on Russia yet profiting handsomely from the NATO peace dividend.

It's an outrage and an enormous historical mistake.

If you ever visit France, you will find that almost every town has a Rue Marechal Foch or similar.Ferdinand Foch was appointed commander in chief of the allied armies in March 1918.He seems to be overlooked outside his own country.

Arguably WW1 (part 2) might not have happened if the French in particular were not so vindictive after part 1.

But because of the atrocities based on race perpetrated by Germany, and in many cases supported by much of the French establishment, I am inclined to agree. Reality was that politics and the threat of the USSR dictated the lenient treatment of German and Japanese industry in particular.

Except for the fact that post-1918 the US Army was reduced back to pre war size. In 1938, the US military posessed fewer than 300 machine guns and was still equipped with Spanish American war era artillery.
Also, American politics after 1918 was predominantly isolationist.

Funny you should say that because it was General Monash’s proposal to combine the services that formed the winning strategy.
The definition of stupid has got to be the belief that more guns will negate the bloodshed done with guns.
