    Default Across The Bar

I learned recently that John Letcher, aeronautical engineer, extraordinary small boat sailor, author of "Self-Steering For Sailing Craft," and designer of some remarkable naval architecture CAD software, has crossed the bar. He was a longtime resident of my hometown, Southwest Harbor, ME, but had apparently been in a care home, in Bangor, for quite a while.

I knew him a little bit in person; enough to poke my head into the AeroHydro offices and say hello whenever I was passing by. He was a genuinely good fellow, always happy to answer my questions and chat for a while, the sort of person you wanted to be around just because he was a nice guy. I didn't realize just what a resource he was, as a sailor, until I had moved away, and am still kicking myself for not seeking him out more.

Here's to him! Fair winds and following seas, John.

I have his book on self-steering and plan to put it to good use soon.

His engineering rigor makes it very valuable.

    Fair winds..

I'm sorry to learn this sad news. John was (amongst other things) one of the pioneers of computer lines fairing. Sail on....

His self steering book is one of my favorites. Sure racing along in a boat is fun, but I find balancing things up and having a boat sail along unattended for hours on end more exhilarating.

"John was an exceptionally kind, courteous, and intelligent man..."

    This is an understatement.

Thank you for posting the link to the BDN obit.

This is the first lesson ye should learn: There is so much good in the worst of us, and so much bad in the best of us, it doesn't behoove any of us to speak evil of the rest of us.
