just a brief update on work on the Peterson Katy design build ...
I have finished the cap rail (in the rough). It still needs final fairing and then will have both outboard and inboard topside edges turned over with a router.
There is certainly a lot of sheer at the stem and stern as per the design.
the cap rail is made up of Spur Mahogany or Spurwood. Its a beautiful dense hardwood to work with and will look great when varnished.
I will endeavour to clean up the hull in the next phase of work and the cap rail will be completed at the end of hull fairing and painting (primer) and puttying the seams.

incidentally, the forward mooring bit is the size stipulated in the design. it is BIG and looks like it would not be out of place on a 40 footer!

We have started work on the masts. today I got down the mast jig that has been in the roof since the days of building DECATUR. We worked the jig down in sections and had it tied off with rope at one end and a block and tackle at the other. The timber boat cleat Dad bolted to the work bench many years ago for no apparent reason....certainly helped while I got the lines sorted!

it will be dismantled and the timber repurposed elsewhere (likely for furniture in my house) when the mast and spars have been built. we don't throw any timber away these days.

as much space as possible has been cleared to allow work on the jig and mast alongside the boat. The mast will be 43' in length.

What a great looking boat. Just a reminder whenever I see tall ladders I now cringe after falling last Nov. and ending up with a broken Femur. Don't go up when no one else is around.

yes I fully understand the 'terror' there! Dad will always hold the base of the ladder for me even if I am doing safe work...just a precaution I guess. I would hate to fall again myself as I suspect I would not fair very well at all. I carry injuries from my last cliff fall of 2 years ago which affect me every day.

I hope you have mended well and don't get too much pain.

A lovely design, and it looks like you are doing a fine job of it, Bernadette. Keep up the good work, and work safely.

the design is a nice one for sure. I do like my little boat! The design is one that Dad has always wanted to build.
With reference to the hull; the result of 'fine' work must rest fairly and squarely with Dad. He is to be credited with planking a beautifully fair hull and I am... just the "apprentice". Dad has always told me that he enjoys planking the most above all other aspects of boatbuilding.

I look back at what I have posted and read the comments people write...I am one very fortunate woman to have had a father who has done so much for me and with me over the years with building two beautiful boats and is now, at 86 still with me while we finish off this little one. He is a remarkable man and a wonderful father.

Andrew, we are building to the Katy design which is a Cutter. She was based on the "Susan" which is the 28' schooner design.
As the original Peterson design was drawn as a 28'-6", I wasn't keen to have a boat under 30' so we stretched her out across each station to be 30' on deck. The design waterline for the "Katy" is 22'-10", beam of 9' and draft of 4'-1". Displacement about 6t.

Its always been part time and awhile back, I stopped keeping a record of the hours.
We started back in 2008. She wasn't supposed to take this long (spanning the years) but "life" got in the way with so much...
Progress should be a little more plain sailing now that Im settling into a routine with my FIFO job and the 'hard' work has been done building the hull.

Oh my, a table saw is so much more efficient then most other methods of sawing planks and dimensional lumber. I wouldn't work on wooden boats without one.

we have two table saws. one of them is Dad's (a Paul Call) but its a bit in need of a refurbish by my reckoning. he's used it all his life in commercial boatbuilding so you can probably understand why it needs a clean up. its done a lot of work and its quite old and rickety. the other saw (brand unknown) is my own which I purchased from a garage sale for $50 but then had to pay $250 to get a new power switch fitted. I just don't like it all that much so I never use it. I really want what I call a (larger) flat bed saw...terminology may be confusing things here. the two we have here have only small tables as such and are on small support stands.
I have a dislike for the table saws we have as I had a stupid accident awhile back when a lump of timber flew back and hit me in the face...so Im "saw shy" now.

Very understandable, table saws can be dangerous. But they are also indispensable. Hold downs, kickback dogs, feather boards, auto feeders. Can help them be safer. The biggest thing is to not be in alignment ( no body parts) with the blade or the work.

Hi there. Great to see you back at it. I've been slowly working on BISH as well. Got the interior in, now systems, engine stuff, deck, and rig. My math puts me at 75 years old at launch... that's why I have now added a starter and a battery to my crank-start SABB. There's not much headroom below, but I'll be bent over anyway by then, so all works out.
