    Rear gunners in the Ilyushin Il-2 had a death rate four times that of the pilots due to much less protection. The engine, radiators, fuel tank - and pilot - were in a 12mm thick armoured tub.

    Thanks, seeing the cannons I assumed multi purpose including tank busting and ground attack.

    This was from Vietnam, so that plane was going into combat well over draft or call-up age.

    Wow. I've taken battle damage but nothing like that.

    From the position of the ailerons, they ought to be rolling like they are in a clothes dryer.
    The best statement I've seen from this latest carnage came from a student who lived through it -

    Quite possibly, they are not getting much lift from that port wing.

    The DC3/C47 could take a beating. During the Sicily campaign Dad landed at a forward base delivering ammunition. He was absentmindedly following some fighters taxiing along between to buildings. The fighters fit. The Gooney did not. Took three feet off one wing tip and five off the other. While the plane was unloaded, Dad had the crew chief straighten what was well attached and cut free anything that might flap. And flew back to CasaBlanca.

    There was a civilian DC-3 airliner that flew into a mountain and sheered off most of one wing just outboard of the engine and still landed safely.

    What are you doing about it?
