    Default bicycles, an industrial design thread

    bicycles, one of man's most elegant creations, regardless of form

    but this is over the top



    Simpler is better, except when complicated looks really cool.

    Interesting how they have painted the rear strut dark so it focuses the eye on the 'cantilever' of the frame.
    Hope for the best, but plan for the worst.

    "Over the top"... so to speak.

    As a design exercise... I like it a lot. But instead of attempting to 'disappear' that seat stay with dark paint... they should have given it a bit of curve, and had it swoop into the seat tube. As is... it looks like a hasty afterthought. "Oops... not rigid enough - better add some triangulation, just about here".

    I certainly get the visual appeal, but does this design in any way approach the structural perfection of the ordinary diamond frame?

    I'd lean slighly toward 'not'. But I don't know enough about frame design to speculate in advance of testing. I was involved - at 'kibitzer' level - when Burley Design was developing its tandem bikes, but I'm no kinda expert.

    Actually, one of the primary reasons we still have the diamond frame style is the UCI, which mandates all bicycles have a diamond style frame and “look” like bicycles.
    Really.
    They have taken always records for illegal bikes and seating/pedaling positions. See Obree and Boardman.

    The last Time Trial/Triathlon bike I owned, for example, was NOT UCI legal. I couldn’t use it in any UCI sanctioned events because it was not considered a “bicycle”.

    Bicycles all look alike after a certain point, to the uninitiated. I see nothing wrong with embellishments, or attempts to differentiate through design one from the next. Variety, spice, and all that considered. . .

    I owned one of these for a while, it stood out. It too was lauded for its design.

    I like the the old dry foot bike still in the bicycle vernacular. Paul's is a nice stying exercise, but no-cigar in design. More sculpture and design M-bation than anything. Just my opinion as an old, award winning industrial designer.

    The OP photo looks like it would have the stiffness of a wet noodle to ride. I've ridden many cutting edge frames and it's hard to beat the double diamond for stiffness and power transfer to the rear wheel.

    Chris Boardman's Lotus type 108 designed carbon fiber was kinda cool and stiff, but it was heavy as hell The frame is an advanced aerofoil cross-section using a carbon composite monocoque.




    Such radical shaping unfortunately is currently outlawed by cycling's governing body, the UCI

    Look Mum No Brakes ...Look Mum , no teeth. Awhile ago now, but did do a bit velodrome stuff on short wheelbase fixies as they are now known. Track irons we called 'em... always had one brake.

    Exactly, as rgt says..... Losing the adjustment of the seat post for an element that isn't even pretty.

    Yes. A fixed wheel.

    Track bikes are fixed wheel, fixed gear.

    Fixies are fixed wheel, fixed gear bikes, but not necessarily track bikes. Any fixed wheel, fixed gear bike is a ďfixieĒ provided itís ridden on the street or trail. Scorchers are good examples.

    The coolest fixies are the jumping bikes. Jumping a 700c fat tired fixed wheel, fixed gear bike is a wild experience. In fact, riding off-road on a fixie is an experience of its own.

    On a trail Iíve run brakes, but never on the road.

    Well, I havenít in 25 years+.

    Interesting design, but how many extra pounds of tubing does it use compared to a bike like my Raleigh International and how much extra would it cost to produce? I also like having brakes.

    but they make some pretty good looking to my eye conventional bikes

    The orange bike is pretty. I love how the flow windows are “hearted” and painted red. Lovely detail. Oh, and I love those old non aero levers. They pull GOBS of cable, so modulate well.

    The bottom bike looks like an 853 assembly line bike, to me. I had a very similar looking housebranded KHS during the last days of steel. If so, it is a FINE riding bike. That 853 was the business.
