years and years ago, going on close to 30 now, my father helped to make ends meet by being a limo driver. The company he worked for used MB limos. He was sitting, waiting for a pick up with one of The Donald's men opened the back door and ushered Donald in to see. He was trying to sell him on getting rid of the Lincoln for a MB. Maybe that is why he hates Mercedes?

    20% vs. 2%.

OK, I was not aware that there was an existing tariff of 2%.

The tariff surely would not increase the price of the car by 18% (20-2), as the steel and aluminum comprise a small part of the overall price.

So one is not opposed to a tariff, just to the amount applied?

Didn't people in the US want to tax the rich, like all those big shareholders?

The tariff taxes the customers, not the shareholders. The shareholders and the corporations got a tax break. It's just another regressive tax.

If we are going to worry about reality, we might have to treat politics rationally. That will take all the fun out of demonizing each other.

President Trump's end game is not to add tariffs, it is to reduce or eliminate them.

Remember, our current president said that he did want to see any new Mercedes on Fifth Avenue.
So, he doesn't care, as long as it is new? How about the R-class that is built in Indiana and sold in China?

I would guess that the current tariffs may offset the cost of collecting them. I would oppose removing them entirely for this reason,

If the current tariffs offset the cost of collecting them is the case, what is the point of having them?? Job creation???

As an aside, Germany has come up with a set of 'rules' to cover autonomous cars.

No Intention for thread drift, but this won't become an issue until there is 20% tariff on Hotel Rooms.
I'm serious, does anyone have any idea what it cost for a business traveler ( never mind a tourist or destination traveler) for overseas accommodations at a 4 or 5 star hotel?
Wait til they get the bill in Euro's or Huan etc. plus 20 and do the math.
