Default Assault rifles are now old hat……...

The Chinese have invented a practical Laser Rifle……….

"CHINA has developed a powerful new laser assault rifle that can obliterate a target from nearly a kilometre away, researchers claim.According to Chinese researchers, the ZKZM-500 laser assault rifle can “instantly carbonise” human skin and tissues, set a person on fire and make them feel “pain beyond endurance”.
A laser weapons scientist said the device was able to “burn through clothes in a split second … If the fabric is flammable, the whole person will be set on fire”, the South China Morning Post reports.

The weapon weighs three kilos, about the same as an AK-47, and has a range of 800 metres that can be mounted on vehicles.

figured it wouldn't be long.. humans are (too) good at killing, and destroying.

"The weapon is said to be powered by a rechargeable lithium battery, and can fire over 1000 shots per charge, lasting no more than two seconds each."

That's a lot of shooting, and a lot of ammo not being carried around.

So, if we all wanted one of these at home does the 2nd amendment give us the right?

And no need for a pesky class iii silencer.

No silencers, no recoil. Probably a near-infrared semiconductor laser. The article says 2 second pulse duration, so it's CW. The trick is to keep moving fast enough that the beam is not on one area the full exposure duration. And wear shiny clothes.

Doesn't work well in dust, smoke or haze.

Nonsense. No such thing. There are too many physical science reasons why such a thing could not exist, not the least of which is a Lithium battery which could power it.

What happens when this supposedly lethal beam travels through 800 meters of air? If there was any humidity in that air, the laser's heat would be reduced dramatically.

    I love this part:

For instance it says law enforcement could counter “illegal protests” by setting fire to banners from a long distance.
It also says protest leaders could be targeted by setting fire to their clothing or hair which, the document says, would mean they lose “the rhythms of their speech and powers of persuasion”.

Admittedly, the rhythm of my speech probably would be lost if my hair were on fire.

Absolutely nothing could make me lose the talk rhythm speaking of me patterns.

    Fire too cannot.

I would think a short, powerful pulse would be more accurate, effective and require less power.

In my work with the defendants (at the Nuremberg Trails 1945-1949)
I was searching for the nature of evil and I now think I have come close to defining it. A lack of empathy. It’s the one characteristic that connects all the
defendants, a genuine incapacity to feel with their fellow men.

This laser is really possible, not too difficult even. You can buy an off the shelf battery capable of supplying continuous 6 kW for 30 minutes, say for an ebike. Use it to drive a semiconductor laser with 30% efficiency, you've got a 2 kW beam. Semiconductor lasers at near IR, around 1 um wavelength, have low water and window glass absorption but would set your clothes on fire at a small spot size. The spot size is the trick, you would need a way to make a very high "brightness" beam, capable of traveling the 800 meters with low divergence. There are many papers written with tricks to do this. The weapon would likely not look like the images I've seen of a rifle type muzzle, instead a big lens at the output would let you adjust far field focus to put the smallest spot at the target distance. We make a small laser for dental treatments, it can be very effective and gentle at the right setting but is capable of 2 kW pulses. I have burned a hole through a 2x4 in a few seconds with one of them.

Hmmm - I do have a laser, and a battery pack for the new ebike. Gotta go try some experiments....

Can it be set to stun? Or is it more about kill and cook in one move?

Setting people's clothing and hair on fire might just possibly be a way to win a battle, but I'm inclined to think the military won't want it set on 'stun.' They'll want it set on 'juice.'

I ever get a bike with laser mounted on it and traffic will never be the same.

Many moons ago I was talking with Chuck about a hand held EMP that can be directed at individual targets (jet skis to be precise) The military now has a working one they can carry in a truck.

That would mean 70 % waste heat. After 1 minute of laser use it is 4.2 kW * 60 s = 252 kJ. A gun of 3 kg mass would be about 80 or 100 deg. Celsius hotter than before. Cooling would be not that easy. Semiconductors don't tolerate heat as much as steel.

Yes, that is part of the engineering in that package. Probably why they limit to 2 second bursts.
