    Default Tres Californias?

    splitca-041318.jpg

We could talk all day long about the rights and wrongs of this idea that will now make it to the November ballot, but what about names?

California is ok, but Northern California? Southern California? Seems repetitious and boring. We can do better than that!

Maybe Northern California could use one of Humbolt Counties agricultural crops as a name? SoCal?

Ideas are needed! Do you have one?

P.S. Monterey got s_____d on the dividing lines.

Well say 'Southern California' uses 'SoCal' would it be OK for 'Northern California' to use 'NoCal' ?

If so, would that make it a (NoCalorie) haven for weight loss aficionados ?

That particular division does not really make sense. If I could only split it three ways, I would make Northern California include the Bay Area counties, probably south to Monterey, east to Alameda and Contra Costa counties, and north to Marin County. Southern California could include from Santa Barbara County south to the Mexican border. Not sure how far east to go with that, but probably all the way to the Arizona border. The remaining counties would be in the state of Jefferson.

Of course, to have any chance of actually happening (slim already), it would have to be politically neutral. So, one of the states would be solid Democrat like California is now. The two additional states would either need to both be purple, or one red, and one blue. As drawn, it looks like two solidly blue states, and one bluish purple state.

The premise of the initiative, that California is too big makes a lot of sense. However, to truly represent the diversity of California, the split probably needs to be at least 6 states. I would go with 1) Bay Area, 2) Santa Barbara/Los Angeles/San Diego and surrounding densely populated areas, 3) North Coast, 4) Central Coast, 5) Central Valley, 6) California Mountains, and 7) Southern California east of the major population centers. Numbers 6 and 7 might be able to be joined.

Of course, none of this will happen. There is probably a greater chance California as a whole will secede. If we do it quickly, the incumbent President, being about the furthest thing from Lincoln possible, might be inclined to say "Good riddance", and "To hell with the Union".

    Dumb, dumber, and dumbest idea.

Besides, it doesn't matter worth a damn what the state resdients want, only the Feds can create new states.

I hadn't considered that possibility. Donnie TwoScoops could very well like this idea of ridding himself of this bothersome group of citizens.

By the way, this has been tried before back in 1992 I think. And no way will it happen with today's congress.

But if you consider the possibilities and potential outcomes...

Even the feds can't subdivide states I to new states. Not the Congress, not the President and not the Supreme Court. There's no constitutional provision for subdividing existing states. Only a provision for admitting new states into the Union.

The referendum is dead as soon as it hits Federal court.

Sorry... it's just an ill-considered notion. There certainly are arguments to be made for splitting large states into more representative chunks. Not convincing arguments, in my view... but legitimate ones. Mostly - the promoters of this plan aren't making them. They are simply allowing themselves to become a reactive symptom of the escalating polarization of our society. A polarization that is a 'bug', not a feature, and is (he said hopefully) correctable. So this 'solution' is likely an over-reaction. Pointless as best, and very possibly damaging in the long run.

Quite right, sometime around 1863 according to wiki.

No doubt about it, ill-considered is an understatement, but in light of the current political situation is it a surprise?

For reasons of rebellion, the idea entices me.

And when you look at the size of the current California economy ...

But they still need better names!

After Virginia's secession in 1861, what is now West Virginia seceded from Virginia (poor mountaineers in the hills and hollers of Appalachia got nothing from slavery). They were re-admitted to the Union, provisionally, as the State of Augusta.

Following the end of the recent unpleasantness, IIRC, Virginia wanted their wayward stepchild back. WV said... err ... "no", and were admitted fully as West Virginia.

Doesn't set much precedent, given the exigent circumstances, what with insurrection and rebellion on the table.
