    Default Colored Pencil

It`s been a while since I have done any drawing , and you don`t realize just how rusty you get from lack of practice.

This is an effort to draw a somewhat realistic representation of some Koi in a pond. The reference pictures came from various collected pictures on the web , and I combined them into my own composition.

The medium is Derwent Artist`s Pencils , on black wet and dry paper . I like this ground because it can hold a lot of the pencil`s pigment.

    Sketching in the fish.

I added the swirls of color and bubbles around the tail area to try and convey a sense of movement to the fish.

Adding some ripples to the surface of the water for interest.

The colors are built up with several layers.

I like colored pencils. I recently picked up a set of Prismacolor Premium to colorize some renderings for a furniture project, and have subsequently been playing with them for fun. I've also done a tiny bit lately with some Bruynzeel 'Aquarel' pencils. Have you ever played with them? But I'm no artist - not by any stretch of the imagination. More of a mechanical draftsman. With the pencils - I just scribble and giggle and sigh. I'm jealous of your talent.

I showed these to my partner Ken, who is an amateur artist. He has dabbled in color pencil work.

He said, "Wow, those are great. I wish I could get the shading right like that!"

I said, "Yep, it would be cool!"

That's what Ken gets for not unloading the dishwasher like he was suppose to do!

looking good. if you take a piece of paper and roll it real tight with a point at the end you can blend the colors.

There's some super fine wet and dry for car finishing that is a very light grey, almost creamy white. your skills might work well on that too. Nice.

Looks really great. Love the ripples.
I just saw some of David Hockneys swimming pool paintings here at the MCA in Sydney. I always wanted to see them in the flesh. I think you've captured the 'liquidness' of the water just as well.
I wonder are the pebbles too regular, as compared to the broken edges of the fish?
    The colours are working great.

Thank you for your comments . I like Hockney.

I`m wondering about the pebble size myself . I think I will Introduce some larger ones to break things up a bit.

jonboy , I will search for the white paper you mention , I would like to try it I think.

There are much larger sheets of sanded pastel paper called colorfix that I use for larger works .

Starting out , I will need more practice with larger work I feel . It`s been about ten years since I last used pencils....

Most kind Mr. Sibley . Thank you .

The grey / green on the pebbles is supposed to represent the presence of " bio film " , the naturally occurring even coating of bacterial cells and slime that adheres to inert surfaces in ponds. The problem is that it usually looks quite monotone and boring in nature , so I took some artistic " license " here to make it more pleasing to the eye by adding at least a hint of color. I have tried to keep the color values subdued in order to not make the picture too busy.

Thank you for the encouragement Mr smith , it`s appreciated. You are all very generous.
