    Question Country music?

First, have you ever heard a 'Happy country music song' ?

    Can you describe 'Country music?

Perhaps: In other words, after the following phrases, you should hear Foxworthy saying, "It might be a Country song." . . .

    • If it is sung by a white person and you can understand the lyrics....
    • .
    • If it has a simple cord progression, one that you could learn in a given afternoon....
    • .
    • If it tells a sad story that you can follow...
    • .
    • If you can remember and sing the chorus after your first listen....
    • .
    • If you can make out what the instruments playing are...
    • .
    • If the singer has a Southern accent....
    • .
    • If the song sticks to simple metaphors about hardships of life and nature....
    • .
    • If it mentions either Cowboys, horses, or doggies....
    • .
    • If you find yourself waiting for the "twang"...

Glen, to me it seems that Country music somehow always seems to have a bit of 'sadness' underlying it.

That is why I asked about happy country songs.

Maybe that underlying 'sadness' is part of its widespread appeal.

Mind you is this considered a real 'country music' song?

Seems to me there's a lot of sadness in many genres. Most "love" songs seem to be "love gone wrong" songs.

I don’t like country music. But having said that, what I don’t like is generally the artists that are on shows like the CMA awards shows and the like. But I DO like artists like Willy Nelson, Kristofferson, Allison Krause, Emmy Lou Harris, etc. So my question is, how does one divide these two categories? I know Krause et al lean a little more bluegrass, but the category is not all bluegrass. I’m thinking maybe the difference is more between Nashville and Austin styles?

My wife and I agree with your tastes, ron II. Her background in country music is firmer than mine, so I asked her your question. She said it has a lot to do with the instrumental arrangements, and of course, whether the artist wants to do pop or not. In Emmylou's music, you can identify all the instruments, the bass thumping in the background, a dobro if it's present, certainly a banjo or fiddle. We consider Emmylou not "the queen of country music", but rather the Empress. We'll be attending one of her concerts in the Midwest soon. Kristofferson is a long-time favorite of my wife's. While the artists you list are not as "old timey" as Hazel Dickens, they are sort of a natural progression, not influences by pop or by line dancing rhythms, which I once heard an NC call "cattle walk".

One satirist once said that the three great themes of country music were " your cheatin' heart, your cheatin' pickup truck, and your cheatin' dog".

I find typical country music to be formulaic.
It just does not speak to my innards the way jazz and blues do.

When I was young, "country" meant "honkytonk" and I hated honkytonk more than anything. I still do.

It was a long time before I learned how honkytonk coopted country music pushing all other forms to the back.

The diversity and creativity in country music today is really very enjoyable. I especially enjoy the return of bluegrass and the infusion of folk.

And John Denver said he was a western artist, not a country artist. He saw a very real distinction.

PS..anybody who thinks Emmylou isn't a 'Pop' Country Music star, with plenty of time on the award shows, hasn't been paying attention.

Wow. I thought I had or at least had heard, every Ronstadt recording, but I somehow missed that one. I wonder if that was Henley and Frey backing her up.

If you’re implying that I haven’t been paying attention to the country music awards shows, you are absolutely right.

BTW, to what is this a post script?
