Default What have you been up to this week?

I was doing the annual Sani2C adventure race in the Kwazulu Natal Midlands from Wednesday to Friday with my son. It is a multi stage MTB event starting at Sani Pass in Lesotho, ending at Scottburgh on the South African East Coast. You do 270 km over the three days, 82 km the first, 99 km the second and 82 km the third. Total route ascent is 3,4 km and total descent 4,6 km. It is my third one, my son's first. It took us a total of 19 hours in the saddle.

Here we are still looking fresh on day 1.

Any feature significant enough to get a name is trouble. This climb is called "Work to Do"

There are also loads of muddy tracks.

The single tracks are steep and very quick, with some serious drops should you miss a corner and go off the edge.

Here is an oldish Youtube video (not mine) of two of the many descents.

This year there was the first fatality in the 14 years that it is being run, a rider had a heart attack. He was in really good shape, it was his sixth race and only 39 years old. I guess he may have had some underlying pre-existing condition.

    Cheers!

That looks like quite the bicycle ride, devout! Congrats on you and your son's completion of it. I have never been much of a cyclist, and if I were to try such a ride at my current advanced age and girth, I would surely be the second fatality of the race. Thanks for post this so old guys like me can live it vicariously.
Hope for the best, but plan for the worst.

Good for you! I've had friends do cross country treks, but on paved roads.
What have I been doing? Nothing anywhere near as exciting. Clearing my property of debris after a harsh winter. Chainsawing downed trees, etc. Bone tired, though, as I'm sure you were.

That looks like a lot of fun! Congratulations on finishing it.

All I did was work, work, and... (What was it? Oh, yes!) work.

Getting ready for an early June launch. This picture was taken 2 weeks ago. I have now finished all varnishing and almost all sanding. I will finish sanding today. I started painting yesterday and should be done in about 10 days. It will take that long because I have house guests for 4 days starting in a week and a chemo session this coming Friday. Both events will slow me down.

Flew 5 hours in a Spitfire.

Then 3 days getting Drake ready to launch. She goes in, gently, inch by inch, in a couple of hours.

We here in New Zealand had a visit from UK dinghy cruiser Roger Barnes, we managed to get two groups of open boats together to take him sailing, had a great time meeting a very good guy. A privilege to have had some time with him.

Well, not a Spit, for certain.

Looks like quite an event, a massive organizing undertaking.

Me, the high point for my week was attempting to make bike riding a little safer...IMG_20180510_133323339.jpg

I also attempted to speak truth to power at Town Meeting, wanting to point out the myriad of flaws in a planned bike path. I was, of course, ruled Out of Order. But I am not done!

Preparing for the first exhibition in a gallery/work space i have built for Anne in the end of one of our agricultural sheds. Getting a handle on the possible numbers is what's occupying our minds at present.

Sorry, I can't post photos on the Internet using a mini iPad. My finger-ends are too clumsy.

I'm glad you guys are having fun and doing challenging and rewarding stuff( impressive, very impressive.)

Moi? I spent the better parts of TWO days on one door. One old 1910 door which someone attempted to kick through several years ago. That shocked the hinges, started the screws.
On deconstruction it turned into a cluster of on going replacement of timber , bunging of holes and rebating of hinges to hang 'the same as it was'.
    The west system came out.

Performing a combination of zonal phased-array, time of flight diffraction, and transverse conventional single beam ultrasonic weld inspection to 40 inch diameter 16.8 mm wall thickness V bevel circumferential pipe welds, commonly known as Automated Ultrasonic Testing, in the rain, from a 4x4 vehicle deep in the Bavarian forests and hop field region North of Münich. Also trying to make some kind of useful sense from the scan data I am yielding.

All the fun of the fair.

    Beers good.

Thanks Dave, Snake Valley and Zwarkops AFB is just about 5 km down the road from my house. We had two other flying Spitfire here in SA. One was damaged in a crash in around 2000. The other flying Spit called "Evelyn" from around here was sold to a collector in the US in the 80's. I remember seeing her at airshows in SA when I was in school in the 70's. Here is a link:

Sorry, but the forums software rotates pictures anti-clockwise through 90º.
Enjoy a good rum on the rocks at sunset.
