Reading the thread referenced, it occurred to me that this group of loonies (WBF in general and the Bilge, specifically) may just have an impeccable selection of skin art, perhaps even a "Sailor Jerry" or two.

I have two small Ravens flying in silhouette across my ribs, in the same location my son has a heron flying across his. But no, I don't think you much want to see my pasty white middle.

I never even considered it. Buffet called it, "A permanent reminder of a temporary feeling" and that about sums it up.

I hear people say that it's a personal statement, but who doesn't change over the decades and their views (their statements) evolve? I can't imagine wanting now what I wanted 40 years ago (wife excluded).

It was a family thing, for me. I like it, but don't plan on more decorative art.

My son has about ten tattoos on various parts of his anatomy but the nude hula dancer on his calf is the biggest. Most of them are Army-related.

His daughter has more, including a serpent that starts on her ankle and does several rotations around her torso and nether regions finally coming over her shoulder and devouring a breast. And no, I've never seen it, the suite were described to me by her ex-husband.

I don't have one.... but I always wanted to get one that said 'Born to be Mild'
"Reason and facts are sacrificed to opinion and myth. Demonstrable falsehoods are circulated and recycled as fact. Narrow minded opinion refuses to be subjected to thought and analysis. Too many now subject events to a prefabricated set of interpretations, usually provided by a biased media source. The myth is more comfortable than the often difficult search for truth."

Ordinarily, no. Wouldn't consider it. But to commemorate something remarkable, then maybe.

If you deny it, you prolly have one. <G>

None for me, but I came close once. Bacon-related.

My youngest son once left a cast iron pan on the stove, after cooking bacon, with the burner still on. When I smelled the smoke, I charged in and grabbed it, not realizing it was actually sloshing full of bacon grease. A wad of hot deliciousness blurped up onto my hand/wrist. The dermatologist warned me to expect a splash-shaped scar with would probably be a very dark red. Quite the contrast to my normal pale pink.

So I got the notion of a tat in roughly that same splash shape - starting at the thumb-web, and radiating up to just above my wrist. But make it flames. Rat-rod, George Barris type flames. Asked the doc if that would be bad for the scar somehow. He thought it a terrible idea. When pressed, however, he reluctantly allowed as how it wouldn't actually damage anything. The nurse, while dressing my burn, later said she thought it was the coolest response she'd ever heard from one of their patients, and offered me her number if I wanted to discuss it further with someone more sympathetic than her 'tightly-wound' (as she politely phrased it) boss.

In the end - it healed with a barely noticeable scar. No bright red. No nothing, hardly. And no excuse for my first tattoo. <sigh>

Falling out of a dirty british coaster, the Georgina B with the skipper and mate, st Valery sur Somme I think, a weekend to kill before the stevedores came in to unload, in a town with a bar a whorehouse and a tattoo parlour and not much else....went into the tattoo parlour and said I want something small unobtrusive and in a coverable área.

Part of the tat I have on my upper thigh reads "live for the moment".

The scars from road rash, surgery, and the usual cuts requiring stitches reminds me that there is a price to pay if you want to play.

Meeting with a new optometrist the other day, we were exploring the possible sources of a slight deterioration of the vision in one eye. A splash of methylene chloride? Not enough ventilation when spraying isocyanates? A good smack in the eye socket from a boom? Drinking/pipe smoking/wild women?? And at some point - I said, "Yeah... my face didn't always look like this. I used to be handsome" <G> (in the end, we settled on 'age-related')

Never even contemplated a tattoo. Personally I find them to be rather tacky.

Not intentional; right leg has a few black/grey specks from a ford station wagon heater I demolished with my knee when the driver hit a tree.
Dr. got most of it by wiping the wound out with acetone, glad he was not more thorough.

BBC radio program only a day or so ago about tattoos and the changeing social acceptance , acquisition etc... one in four has one of some kind...
fits in with the poll results more or less...

I did come home one day and announced I'd just got four tattoos '...What...???. where ? 'oh a couple on my bum , a couple on my lower back ' I replied... dropped my trousers to reveal four tiny blue dots that the radiotherapy guys used to coordinate and target the zapper onto my colon tumour. oh how we laughed.

Mom and Dad are the only tats I would ever consider. Those are good choices.

My partner never does things by halves, got herself a full back tatt, stunning. I got one on my upper arm in solidarity, worked up a design that tells of my ancestry, my birthplace and my connection with the sea. All good, something to proud of, never ever had a negative comment.
When we stay at a naturist park when travelling we've noted that probably 35% of the people there have tatts, some good, some not.

I don't have any but have thought seriously about getting an authentic Hawaiian-style band on my upper arm. But then I learned that such "cultural appropriation" can piss off people....people whose culture I respect and admire, so I really don't want to do that.

I have both. Shrapnel scars from a Pomzet anti-personnel mine on my chest and hip, and one on my shoulder from a bike accident in the 80's. So I put some ink over the shoulder scar. Now it looks and feels just like a Leatherback turtle.

I knew a guy who went camping with his 6-year-old daughter.

As he drove the 3 or 4 hours to the camp, she got bored and drew a couple of stick figures on his arm.

    In ink.

When he got back to town, he had a tattooist trace over them.
