Simpler is better, except when complicated looks really cool.

    Pretty cool rig engineering, though.

Not only a whole new realm of engineering but new realms of sailing. Not only do they have request bridge openings but they also have to notify the local airport in advance of their passing.

Her carbon masts by Dykstra Naval Architects are the largest in the world and have been designed to withstand a Category 2 hurricane.
Better not be in the Caribbean July - November.

Correct me if I am mistaken, but I understand that not many superyachts visit the Caribbean ports in hurricane season.

True, but who knows what people that obtain superyachts of that 'ilk' would/will do.

Through the Strait but not under the bridge -- this should be interesting.

if the masts giver her an "air draft" of 100m.. how long are those booms? The way she sits right now, her rig looks too small

That's not too difficult if the boat capsizes in a 45-knot wind.

It really is quite difficult to build an ugly wooden boat.

Eight pop-out balconies on the port side, at least six on the stbd side. I think that side decks would have been less involved to build. Here she is under sail:

    And bow-on:

A peek on deck (I guess that the owner's brief was pretty insistant on privacy):

And a group photo of probably the two most publicly reviled yachts, both named 'A', and owned by the same guy (I believe):

If I had to pick one of these two I would (strangly enough for one who likes sailboats) the lower one in the picture.

I was in Southern Spars factory recently, they'd just applied for a consent to lengthen their building to accommodate the making of a 124 metre mast that they had an order for, told me that would be the tallest yacht mast on the planet. They had a 90 metre one on the floor at the time. I could walk down the inside of it. Shaking my head.

Sooo I would think it pollutes less, so what if it’s ugly.

Ever bigger, eh? I must admit that, all things being equal, I would much rather have an 'arms race' for the biggest yacht than an actual arms race...

The pollution involved in the construction would be enormous, surely?

It would be much easier to run cables for mast head lights and VHF.

Yes, which is why some of us don't really think that a marginal reduction in pollution is very important. If reducing pollution is the goal (and it's a great one) then it's best served by not building a vast new boat.

why are the tops of the masts shaped like that? Is it an aesthetic thing or is the a purpose to the shape?

Aren't the masts usually limited to the height of a bridge across the Panama Canal? The limit is named after the bridge......
If you can't get through there, cruising options become limited - or lengthy.
