Default Why did my laptop screen go black?

Using my laptop last night and the screen suddenly went poof. Nothing but black. Thought it might be a low battery, plugged it in over night and still nothing. Motor/fan is still whirring away. About three years old. Any ideas? I'm clueless. I'm thinking that all computers are pre-programmed to self-destruct after a few years. I've never had one last longer then that without major problems.
    Thanks!

Check for a function key that turns off the monitor. It usually looks like a rounded rectangle with vertical lines on either side. If that's not it, try hooking up to an external monitor; if you can't get that to work, your video processor may be shot.

What are you doing about it?

^ This. My key for doing that (function + F8 - though yours is probably different) has a little picture of a computer with a square behind it. Pressing the 2 keys together will bring up a screen on the right side - choose PC Only, or anything except 2nd screen only - though some options may make the screen look a bit funny.

I never knew about that monitor key! Tried it, but no result.

Could be the backlight has gone.

It's an HP and I bought it at Staples. It's the only place within about 100 miles to buy a computer around here. Living in the boonies is great, but it does have its drawbacks.

The Staples in South Burlington has a tech guy who has a clue. Maybe your local one does too? It varies from store to store - the one in Williston has no one who could even figure out which end of a screwdriver to use...

Otherwise - maybe you can find a local shop to help?

The guys at the local Staples have been very good in the past. I might try to get up there today but the weather isn't too good: High winds, freezing rain/snow and temps in the 20's. What a wacky spring!

If it was only the backlight that is gone, you might still see an image on the display with reflected light. I'm thinking that a problem with the video processor or a voltage regulator is the issue here.

The question will be if it's worthwhile to fix or time to toss it.

My guess and the easiest thing to do is replace the battery. Take the model number of the battery and look on Amazon for a replacement.

HP batteries seem to die after 2-3 years.

He did say the confuser was whirring away when it happened. One thing I've seen is the wires going to the screen breaking.

@Rich - I get the driving! Sat. was 1/4" of ice from freezing rain, then 3" of snow & last night added another 1/4" of ice. My driveway is a skating rink...

Check the monitor cable, as mentioned they do break from time to time. If it's just the screen that has gone sour and not the GPU, they are not that expensive and quite easy to replace.

Have you pulled the battery out and unplugged it? Give it a minute or so and try again. I don't know why it happens but I see something like this at least once a month (I have almost 300 users).

I used to manage about a 1000 users with HP laptops. Batteries were always an issue. In fact when we would buy them we always ordered an extra battery for every laptop. Again, I would replace the battery. It's a cheap thing to try.

    Oh, but it might.......

One of my two feline friends loves to sleep on my desk and his paws often overlap the keyboard of my Macbook. He seems to know the secret of switching off the screen, although I don't. I just restart it with the power button and persuade him to place his paws elsewhere. Mind you, I have forgotten most of what I ever knew about PCs (after having used them since the era of DOS commands and floppies) Who knows what complications are involved with a PC.

Eureka! That did it! I pulled the battery, swore at it for a minute or so and put it back in. Everything is up and running again.
Give me a pile of wood and I can build anything from a house to a boat practically blindfolded. Stick me with a computer problem and I'm helpless.
Thanks again! Where do I send the check?

    or a new laptop.

A new small Chromebook will be slightly more than an actual new HP battery.

I've never been a fan of HP largely because of the incredible amount of HP bloatware they install - the stuff is worse than an infection of self replicating viruses and impossible to remove.

Bloatware aside, my experience with the hardware has been horrible. Last year, QVC had a special on what looked to be a nice HP laptop - Win 10, touch screen control, latest WiFi hardware, lots of memory, big drive and a MS Office compatible software package. My wife ordered four for her school. Three wouldn't get past booting up. Sent them all back.

For $2,448, you could buy FOUR quite decent PC laptops... and I pretty much could guarantee that at the end of three years, it's highly likely that 3 of the 4 are still fully functional....

...and you don't have to suffer the indignity of going to an Apple store (there will be a thread about this later... after I do a bit of business)

When the graphics card goes on a Mac the screen goes white.

Does that include all the anti-virus programs and subscriptions for same, plus the equivalent of 'full applecare coverage' ?

BTW the computer I am currently using:
    imac.jpeg

How long it will continue, is anyone's guess, but I figure 9 years ain't too bad.

PS out of the 4PC's how many would likely be still running?

My MacBook Pro is 2012. Working fine. Two months ago my 2011 macBook Pro lost its graphics card.

    3 years isn't much.
