    Default New to the Forum

Hello all! I'm new to the forum here, so I thought I'd post my boat and give a bit of information about her. I recently bought the Betselma out of Maine as a project boat. She was launched 70 years ago in 1945 during World War II, and has been carrying tourists around Camden, Maine sight seeing in the last few years. She is very yacht-like in her looks and construction, despite her commercial hertitage. Her original owner, designer, and builder, was Frank Wooster. She's of a down eastern design, 38ft long, 12ft wide, and has a 4ft draft. Powering her is a single 1965 Caterpillar 3304 diesel engine, I believe she'll do at least 10 knots realistically; maybe 9 knots. She needs some work for restoration, but I'm up to the task.

Welcome to the Forum! Can we assume that the boat will be moving from Maine to Alabama? I wonder how the hull will adapt from cold water to warm.
I was born on a wooden boat that I built myself.

Yea, with a mahogany transom, certainly built or 'fancied-up' for the summer people.
Do you know what the planking-framing is?
Northern White Cedar-White Oak, I would think.
Well, with mixed feelings I wish her (and you) a happy retirement!

I have to do some maintenance to her, and replace a couple of garboards and hull boards. She’s going to be my personal fishing vessel, I’m relocating to Florida in a few years. I have an idea in mind for the Betselma, which I will be announcing soon, so keep a weather eye on the horizon...

Yes she will be moved to Alabama, but I will be relocating to Florida in a few years. There I will fish to my little heart’s desire

She’s made or white oak, and I wish I could retire!! I’m years away from that, but I enjoy myself too much in the HVAC industry at the moment

Betselma was named after the two daughters of the owner Betsey and Thelma

Nice looking boat Capt. Do you have a covered slip to put her in? She will fair the warm weather much better under cover. The cool temps in Maine slow bio-degradation quit a bit.

I read all that already, I made the trip up there to look at her before I bought her. She’s not as bad as one would think, honestly it’s just cosmetic

That is a great looking boat! We had a similar design being built here on the West Coast by Ackerman in Costa Mesa CA just after WWII.
It was very popular and very sea worthy!
Wishing you good fortune with your restoration project!

Welcome to our group Capt. Flint!

She has always been kept in very sharp Bristol fashion, in spite of the fact that she scalloped in winter. You have a nice boat there; one that has given thousands of people a taste of Penobscot bay in all kinds of weather. She deserves to be cherished.

    Nice looking boat! Welcome.
There is nothing quite as permanent as a good temporary repair.
