OK I confess, this one chokes me up, especially the lines at the end..

Most 'love" songs are love gone wrong songs, and pretty much all are sad.

Not too many songs sadder than this:

"Reason and facts are sacrificed to opinion and myth. Demonstrable falsehoods are circulated and recycled as fact. Narrow minded opinion refuses to be subjected to thought and analysis. Too many now subject events to a prefabricated set of interpretations, usually provided by a biased media source. The myth is more comfortable than the often difficult search for truth."

I don't know, Joe. Sam Stone is sad, tragic even, but as a dog lover you need to listen to the last verse of These Cold Fingers and get back to me.

Eamonn McGirr used his brilliant voice (google him) to raise a great deal of money for disabilities rights, cerebral palsey and other causes. In 1996 he held the Guinness World Record for endurance singing. I asked him how he even knew that many songs.

"Ah, there's only the two you know. There's the sad song and there's the other one."

In the summers he kept a pub down the road. The best was way late when normal people were gone and many Irish kids who worked the motels and such drifted in. Eamonn's ability to manipulate his audience from weeping to gales of laughter to murderous rage and back to sad love was astonishing, if a bit frightening.

    https://www.nytimes.com/1997/07/27/n...ong-soars.html

At a United Cerebral Palsey dinner - our board had the DA, the county clerk, the state senator and the sheriff, all but the last Republicans of the finest sort, the sheriff being a Democrat - Eamonn got the sheriff and the state senator (The DA and Clerk being too on to Eamonn to fall for his tricks) up "for a little jig" and then held them prisoner bouncing gamely while he spun a two minute satiric send up of Barnstable County politics to "I Shot the Sheriff." Bouncing but truely paralized, they looked like jacked deer.

Beth Orton’s cover of this 1963 Ronettes’ song is pretty sad.

This one even has a wooden boat. Nobody drowns, but it's bad enough. It's based on a real incident, which makes it even sadder.

There are two kinds of boaters: those who have run aground, and those who lie about it.
