    Cool Are you an Atheist?

Submitted as humor. If you don't like it post your own acceptable humour in reply.

An evil Atheist explorer in the deepest Amazon suddenly finds himself surrounded by a bloodthirsty group of natives. Upon surveying the situation, he says quietly to himself: “Oh God, I’m screwed!!!!!.”

There is a ray of light from heaven and a voice booms out:

“No, you are NOT screwed. Pick up that stone at your feet and bash in the head of the chief standing in front of you.
So the explorer picks up the stone and proceeds to bash the living heck out of the chief.
As he stands above the lifeless body, breathing heavily and surrounded by 100 natives with a look of shock on their faces.

Gods voice booms out again: “Okay ….. NOW you’re screwed.
Enjoy a good rum on the rocks at sunset.

None of the other options make any sense.

Given that there's no evidence God, if he exists, gives a damn about the affairs of man, I'm an irrelevantist.

I'm told he doesn't get involved because we have 'free will', which means, I guess, he cannot answer prayers. Yet people pray. For what reason, I don't know.

Prayers do get answered. Some are incapable of seeing/hearing the answers.

That's quite a rationalization. People pray for specific things... if the 'answer' is unrecognizable, then how would you know if there was actually any answer at all?
"Reason and facts are sacrificed to opinion and myth. Demonstrable falsehoods are circulated and recycled as fact. Narrow minded opinion refuses to be subjected to thought and analysis. Too many now subject events to a prefabricated set of interpretations, usually provided by a biased media source. The myth is more comfortable than the often difficult search for truth."

If an apolitical is someone who is not interested or involved in politics, and an asexual is someone without sexual feelings or associations, is, then, an atheist someone who could just care less about a God?

    O hell yes I am.

I am, however, perfectly happy to acknowledge that there are things beyond human cognizance which might lead in the other direction, but I certainly do not lose any sleep over it.

I wouldn't say I'm an atheist; I don't know enough. But it seems to me that this world we live in is enough and more than enough. I'm not quite sure what 'faith' has to do with it.

The way I see it theists have faith, defined as belief without evidence, that there is a god, atheists have faith (once again) that there is no god, and agnostics are honest with themselves and admit that they don't know.

Perhaps, on this thread, someone will explain what it is we trust God to do.

    As Merriam Webster say's in 2B "

    b
    (1) : firm belief in something for which there is no proof
    • clinging to the faith that her missing son would one day return"

Just something to "hold on to" is that not a good thing? or do you want to just live a life of giving up.

That's assuming that not being a theist is giving up. I see it as just the opposite, theists have given up on being honest with themselves. They're a needy lot, relying heavily on the crutch, but so long as they don't impose their foolishness on any one else, including their offspring, who cares? Not me, although I do find it hard to take delusional people seriously.

I'll go with this, which makes me agnostic, and in a general sense agnostic about all things. There is what available evidence suggests, sometimes very strongly, and I lean in that direction without absolute commitment since tomorrow the evidence may be different. This is why I am almost a Determinist.
There is no rational, logical, or physical description of how free will could exist. It therefore makes no sense to praise or condemn anyone on the grounds they are a free willed self that made one choice but could have chosen something else. There is no evidence that such a situation is possible in our Universe. Demonstrate otherwise and I will be thrilled.

I have no firm belief in things for which I have no evidence, although I can speculate and guess as well as anyone. But I really don't understand your questions. 'To hold on to' how? There's plenty in this life that's evident to anyone, and very worthwhile, that one can hold on to. Why would one need 'firm belief in something for which there is no proof' to do that? No 'giving up' involved. I'm not particularly thrilled with the idea of someday dying, but there's not much I can do about it, and it seems the best thing to do is appreciate life while I'm around. I have no idea what, if anything, happens afterward, but I'd bet it won't matter to me at all since there won't be a 'me' anymore to worry about it.

Hah!, a year or 3 ago I argued that out with SamF. I believe in nothing, he could not even comprehend that that itself was not 'a belief'. Gib seems to be in this category as well. Our brains are wired differently woodpile.

In my work with the defendants (at the Nuremberg Trails 1945-1949)
I was searching for the nature of evil and I now think I have come close to defining it. A lack of empathy. Its the one characteristic that connects all the
defendants, a genuine incapacity to feel with their fellow men.

Evil, I think, is the absence of empathy.

Annihilation I find impossible to imagine and also a very likely scenario. A 'me' of some sort continuing after death is easy to imagine but the evidence for it sketchy and mainly religious.
