Default Here comes the blue wave

The election will surely be recounted, but as it is, it appears that Connor Lamb has won the PA 18th congressional district race.....

Significant, because the Republicans won that district by 20 points last time around.

Regardless of whether the result is overturned in a recount, this surely is very significant, and I'm looking forward to seeing how the Republicans are going to spin this one... it should be fun!

Conor Lamb’s (D) win in Pennsylvania’s 18th congressional district special election was a stinging rebuke of President Trump from deep inside red America. It came in a district that overwhelmingly supported him in 2016 and that is seen as so strongly Republican that the Democrats did not even field a candidate in the last two cycles.

Lamb’s victory came in two ways:

Compared to Barack Obama in 2012, he gained far more votes in suburban Allegheny than in rest of the district, building on an anti-Trump backlash among the college educated.

Compared to Hillary Clinton in 2016, he gained more votes in the more blue-collar counties than in Allegheny, countering the Democratic party’s recent erosion in these more rural areas.

In other words, Lamb held the upscale voters who swung to Clinton in 2016 while winning back downscale voters who voted for Obama in 2008 and 2012 but fell away in 2016. Both were needed to win a district that Trump won by 20 percentage points.

Republicans will try hard but it’s impossible to spin this loss into anything other than a devastating rebuke of President Trump and the Republican agenda.

Most striking was how Republican groups backed away from touting their tax law in the final days of the race when they realized the message wasn’t working. The tax cuts they rushed through Congress at the end of last year were designed to stem losses in the midterm elections. But the message fell flat.

    The Los Angeles Times reports:

The most dangerous outcome for Republicans in Tuesday’s special House election is not the prospect of a Democrat taking over one of their seats.

It was the shrugging off by voters of the party’s biggest legislative achievement: the tax cut measure that Republicans hoped would be their major campaign message as they head toward a turbulent midterm election.

Instead, GOP groups shifted to ads about so-called sanctuary cities and immigration. That didn’t work either.

There are 119 congressional districts held by Republicans that are more liberal than Pennsylvania’s 18th. If Democrats are competitive in just half of them, Republicans will be swept out of office this fall in record numbers.

Now for the big laugh.... the problem with the GOP candidate, one GOP strategist is saying.... was his 'porn stache'

“This may not be nice to say: The fact is that the Saccone campaign was a joke. If we had a candidate who could walk and chew gum at the same time, we would have [easily] won the race,” said Corry Bliss, executive director of the Congressional Leadership Fund super PAC, in a statement. An anonymous Pennsylvania GOP strategist told The Washington Examiner they had a very specific complaint about Saccone: His moustache was disgusting.

It’s a porn stache,” the strategist said.

Considering other information in the news today.

Lamb moved a good deal to the right. Just the right amount to win. But not good if other gains come at the expense of more movement to the right.

There were some other comments about the Democrats in office relative to their infrastructure bill and taxation. More movement to the right.

But we will see how Congress works after the 2018 elections.

You and bobbys can spin all you want along with Ryan but, the truth remains, Trump won this district by 19 points and lost to a democrat. That's a fact!

Could be he is making a case for "big tent" parties, with room for moderates as well as polarized groups.

I doubt that the GOP will get the memo, but perhaps the Dems will.

Seems more of a third party candidate disrupted a typical two party election, blue wave? Nice spin.

IIRC, that makes 39 Republican seats in varying state and Federal elections that the Democrats have flipped since the debacle that is this current administration began. Regressives may tap dance all they want about that, but all they are turning in to is smoke and mirrors.

That could be said about any close election with a third party candidate. The district swung 20%. The independent vote amounted to .5%

There is no rational, logical, or physical description of how free will could exist. It therefore makes no sense to praise or condemn anyone on the grounds they are a free willed self that made one choice but could have chosen something else. There is no evidence that such a situation is possible in our Universe. Demonstrate otherwise and I will be thrilled.

Guess what? Lamb will not be labeled a "DINO" and hounded by those to his left.

What do you call a Democrat who moves to the right? A moderate Democrat.

It's actually quite frightening for the left, you're not winning on policy but deficiencies of the opposing candidate. Give that some thought.

I agree. With so many deficient candidates from the right, it really doesn't matter much, does it. As long as the GOP keeps supporting candidates with a remarkable smell about them, the wins might not be too difficult.

Doesn't change the fact that all the Rhodes scholars the left has offered up, they've just squeaked by. Ride that wave, the quality of your candidate might give us someone like Trump some day.....oh sh**

As I have said many times before: The Democrats represent the 19% below the 1%. I would not object to calling most Democrats "DINOs."

No question about it! The GOP wanna-be's have to sell their sole to right-wing extremism to get the nomination and that makes them utterly unacceptable as elected officials. Then again, so many believe those values already and you can't tell the difference between the true believers and the sell outs, so why try?

The right nominated Trump, there is nothing "right" about him. He is a typical, sleazy limousine liberal. Thankfully someone holds enough against him to play a few cards, for example Gorsuch.

This whole notion about right wing extremist, Evangelical Christians and Nazis is just a liberal ploy to degrade candidates. Not one Evangelical, right wing wacko has made it to the final dance.

Perhaps you should give that some thought?

That's to be expected, there is always an ebb and flow of power so to speak. My point is that the left, being in a superior position on all issues is repeating their failure to communicate. I wonder if this isn't the problem with our teachers? Why do we have a Republican win any election considering they are always wrong, why do we have school shootings now that we didn't have years ago?

The left has plenty of good ideas and a lot of bad ones, leading the way appears to be one of the lefts deficiencies, even when in power they flounder.

If the left is so smart why do they not see the errors of their ways and act accordingly and stop blaming someone else for their short comings.

Always right, more intelligent but always one step away from bankruptcy.

I'm sure you're not stupid... so your constant display of right wing bravado, rather than convincing anyone, looks frankly embarrassing and pitiful.

If you were intellectually honest, you'd at least acknowledge that Trump's approval rating is horrendous, his administration is rife with ignorance, incompetence, scandal, and corruption, and the recent special elections clearly indicate that there IS a 'blue shift' in the political spectrum.

But you're NOT intellectually honest.... .
