    Default Don't Feed the Troll

As a support tool for your fellow forumites, if you see a Troll being fed too many oats, just write "Don't Feed the Troll" in this thread - so it pops back up on the radar.

"Don't feed the Troll" means, don't reply and don't quote, let it go.

It can also be a place for contrition - as in, "Damn, I fed a Troll!". It may help you get through that moment of regret.
"People should be able to access these benefits [Social Welfare] as a matter of right, with no more loss of their own standards of self-respect than would be involved in collecting from an insurance company the proceeds of an endowment policy on which they have been paying premiums for years."
Robert Menzies - Liberal Party (Conservative) Prime Minister of Australia.

The trolls are the straws that stir the drinks in the Bilge.

People pine for them when they go quiet.

Trolls also get people banned from the forum. Some trolls are very skilled manipulators.

Certainly my life got better once I realized that not everyone needs a response. They often indict themselves quite efficiently without any help.

‘Course I do reserve the right to issue a scathing smackdown whenever it seems funny enough to be worth my while.

Without some reality injected into this place, it would be pretty quiet. I suppose if you wanted to just get rid of the right noise you could stop playing with avatars, posting five threads a day about the rights assault on humanity and so on.

Face it, the left trolls up the right here every single day and you love it.

I agree with not feeding them (I try, but sometimes fail), and certainly agree with not quoting them (in deference to those who have them on ignore and would rather not read them second-hand), but is mocking and laughing at them OK?

Or did I just feed a troll?
Hope for the best, but plan for the worst.

I've put the worst trolls on ignore and I enjoy this place far more because of it.

There are some intelligent trolls that I can read even if I think they spew nonsense.

    I agree - Don't Feed the Trolls!

It really is quite difficult to build an ugly wooden boat.

Western Brook Pond Fjord, Gros Morne National Park, west coast of Newfoundland.

Edit to add: The fjord was created during the last ice age and when the ice receded, the shoreline on the Strait of Belle Isle (between Newfoundland and Labrador) sprang back up from being compressed by gazillions of tons of ice, isolating what became Western Brook Pond from the sea. Over the millennia, the waters of the pond became fresh, not salt, and as the contributing streams flow over igneous rock with relatively thin soil, the waters feeding Western Brook Pond are low in nutrients and the lake is classified as ultraoligotrophic. An oligotrophic lake is a lake with low primary productivity, as a result of low nutrient content. These lakes have low algal production, and consequently, often have very clear waters, with high drinking-water quality. Western Brook Pond is stunningly clear. There is a 2 mile trail from the coastal highway to the tail of the pond, where two tour boats are available to take you to the head along the thousand-foot cliffs and by numerous waterfalls cascading from the plateau above. One of these, the wonderfully-named Pissing Mare Falls at 350 m (1,150 ft), is one of the highest in eastern North America. I have hiked on the plateau above the fjord and taken the boat tour five or six times, and heartily encourage others to visit. It is, as the Newfoundlanders phrase it, 'wonderful grand'. (I have liberally quoted from Wikipedia's description of Western Brook Pond in this paragraph. - mmd)
