Default The best selling musicians, by album sales, of all time

The Beatles are, of course, #1....

    Elvis Presley is #3.

    #2 would probably surprise you.

"Reason and facts are sacrificed to opinion and myth. Demonstrable falsehoods are circulated and recycled as fact. Narrow minded opinion refuses to be subjected to thought and analysis. Too many now subject events to a prefabricated set of interpretations, usually provided by a biased media source. The myth is more comfortable than the often difficult search for truth."

    Jimmy Paige? Paige? Really?

How could they spell his name wrong?

    I wasn't surprised by GB.

What surprises me is the Stones so far down, tied with Aerosmith and below Barbra.

I find it unsurprising, they have been cruising on their image and old hits for a very long time.I think Mick Taylor understood. What I do find interesting is that the musicians that can get on stage and crank out their hits still make the rounds.I believe the people who talk of the music industry having challenging times have got it wrong-its the record business that is having a tough time.Who would ever have imagined that Brian Wilson could find a selection of talented musicians to play his more imaginative material live?

Should re-title the OP. Should be "Best selling musicians whose labels are members of RIAA"

Jimmy Buffett, for instance, has his own label which handles its own distribution, etc.

    Sad.
A society predicated on the assumption that everyone in it should want to get rich is not well situated to become either ethical or imaginative.

Wait... someone just PM'd me and said #2 is NOT the group ABBA.

How can that be? Was it The Archies, then?

Yeah. Some record company is going to rush to say "We sold ten million of these!"? The band says, "Funny, you only paid us royalties on one thousand!"

Presley is impressive since he was earlier with smaller audiences, fewer outlets, etc.

Sorry Alan, just can't go there.

De Gustibus and all that, but I prefer musicians that have the temerity to blow their brains out with a shotgun when their sell by comes around.

    Not carry on regardless.

I wonder how the list would look if it were somehow adjusted for longevity. For instance Elvis and the Stones are at an advantage over Metallica and Whitney Houston by having had records for sale for a longer period of time.

I own or owned records by just 10 of the performers on the list and of those 10, I don't listen to 6 of them any more.

A few on the list are surprising, Back Street Boys???
Not too surprised by Garth Brooks. His music has actually aged very well, my kids listen to him a lot, probably more than any other country singer. He was perhaps an early version if the true country-pop
star, a type of music that has evolved into something I cannot stand to listen. But his is pretty good.
I would have guessed the Eagles would have been number 2, instead of 5. I thought I had heard they were the number 2 group in sales, but maybe my memory is bad.

Saw him and in concert in the mid 80s when he still did the outrageous costumes. He truly was (is) a great entertainer.
