Default John Welsford Pathfinder Everglades Challenge 2018

    Thank you John Welsford.

John, just finished the EC 2018 with your Pathfinder I built as a Balanced Lug Cat Yawl. I just wanted to thank you for designing such a fine boat. She performed great and took very good care of me when it got a little sketchy.

Here is is a small part of my race report:

Having completed the race, I am happy to report that the Pathfinder performed very well and I have more confidence in the boat than ever. The boat was tested in big running seas, had to claw her way into standing waves and deal with very light headwinds steering herself while the skipper dosed off (that night she made 3knots with her big main when other boats gave up). What was most impressive was that she handled these conditions without putting any stress on me. Running, she surfed easily without threat of broaching. Beating, she was dry and kept her speed though the chop; so long as the skipper steered her properly into the waves so not to slow her forward speed. I can confidently say that the John Welsford Pathfinder is an amazing, capable, comfortable and fast boat.

    The start...

    Nice sunrise day two...

    Finish...

Well done! The boat looks sharp. And pretty sparsely loaded.

Are those store bought oars or did you make them?

Those are a pair of Ocean Racing Oars from Sawyer. They are awesome. They are made to desired length, mine are 11’.

Interesting thread. I'm about to start working on a Pathfinder. Glad to hear of your good experience with her.

Great update, Deke. After a build blog is done I always wish that we could hear more about the sailing.

No pressure, but I would love to hear more about your experience in the EC.

when it got a little sketchy
Sounds pretty understated from what I've been reading. Congratulations.

Probably a bit off topic ,but may be of interest. We came across Dave Perillo's old navigator in Fiji last year. She works for a living as a market garden boat selling produce to cruisers. Periodically sailing between the Yasawas and Lautoka too. That would be a minefield of reefs, and can be quite breezy, an equably capable design /boat.

I think the Navigator would also be a very capable boat.

Some more pics of the start...

Sunrise, normally the race would start shortly, but we were in a weather hold due to small craft adv.....

Waiting for the weather hold to be lifted...

And we are off...she rolled great!....

Your Pathfinder is one of the nicer small boats I've ever seen. She really looked amazing.
I made 3kts in those headwinds that night, too - but I was doing a whole lot of paddling . . . .

Makes me wish I hadn't sold mine. The only time I ever felt way out of my comfort zone was when she got hit by one of the Marlborough Sounds violent wind bombs. It is damn hard to luff up when the wind is spinning all around you!
Definitely a very capable boat for a 17 footer.

Nice boat! What is the cockpit sole made from?
