Stumbled across simonmags awesome Macgregor Canoe build

    http://forum.woodenboat.com/showthre...acgregor-Canoe

It got me thinking what a wonderful, dare I say perfect, for of sailing craft canoes are. We have had threads on ‘small boat porn’ best boats under 12’ 30’ etc so why not simply canoes.

To start off here is my 12 x 30 which I designed as a pure paddler but I am now experimenting with a sailing rig. I started with just the rig but he was a bit scary so I now have added outriggers. The whole setup is held on with two straps and can be added or removed in moments.

I've got a few of those photos. I think I built my first canoe sail around 1992 or so and finally stopped building and officially retired last year. These are some shots sent back from customers over the years, once they got their boats rigged and out on the water.

I have sailed my Hill Ultralight in several states, and have some pics. Not on my phone or this computer though.

Nice thread Tink. This is not a sail I normally see, but they do have it set well. As far a I can tell this is from the 1960s in Australia.

Think sailing canoes can be also pretty in paddling mode:

I have retired my Macgreggor from sailing after 15 or so years. I have other boats, the 50 sq ft rig has been given away, I have built a smaller lateen sail from an old jib. But she's dangerous as well as a deal of fun. I sail in a big open salt water bay and that's OK I'm used to her and can swim home if needs be, and it has been. I would not sell her as a sailing craft lest someone drown.

There was a long thread on the subject of reboarding a swamped canoe in any sea some years ago.

Thanks, I sail mine on narrow tree line lined river with an unstable wind. I tried just the canoe and despite feeling comfortable on a lake on the river it was nerve raking. I looked into righting methods, tested a few but knew it was a disaster in the making. I therefore added the outriggers. Looking at the pictures here has got me thinking, I have found some threads that look useful

Gradually getting more info up about the Viola.

She did very well in the Dorestad RAID despite being the smallest boat by far. We worked hard to make her minimal in every way within the planned envelope of 14' x 40". As you can see the hull is not symmetrical front and back. It is a more dinghy shape for reasons of stability - to make it easy to sail.

One of my favourite sailing canoes (it is also a very good paddling canoe) is the Artemis by Axel Schmid.

Here is Koos Winnips on one of his late in the season canoe tours. None of this is far from his home - exploring and a different viewpoint is the valuable experience. And avoids lots of driving.

I had to draw one of those for my book around 1996 on my old, first generation PowerMac. You wouldn't believe how long it took to draw in all those tack heads.

I see you found my old thread tink. The issue never was resolved really, I just got better at sailing her, and was careful where I sailed her and in what conditions. I planned outriggers, but decided that If I needed them I needed a different boat.
I sail a 12ft skiff now, not prone to capsizes (over 20 kts is a deal of fun), easily righted, comes up with an dry cockpit and no bailing..

your book is a masterpiece and we are all very greatful for the hours of work it clearly took for each exquisite drawing. Thank you

Brainstorms, bits and pieces, assorted concepts and ideas - some tried, some not yet. One of the cool things about sailing canoes is the wide variety of ways to accomplish various design tasks.

Dave, not yet. It's on the list of stuff to do when I get bored with retirement, and I'm not that bored yet.

Almost all of this stuff isn't in the book.

Let me know if you ever decide to make the red, white, and blue design number four sail. I might have to get a car painted to match too.

I'm a fan of the sailing canoe, for sure, and hope to build a few more before I'm through.
Here's the one I took on the Everglades Challenge last week. Best sailing I've ever done.

Todd, I use a Sunfish lateen on her, with the mast and boom, instead of the yard and boom . . . it emulates the sail used on the boats I modeled her from - Perahu Katirs from Java. Pretty much standard slab reefing, with two reef points - done differently than your vertical lateen rig. It took a little fiddling to get things right, but it works just fine. I reefed her down a lot last week, though she doesn't point well at all with two reefs in her.

Seems like the natural thing to do, especially as the sails and loads get higher, as in Roxanne, for example. I'm surprised it's not been done. Irens doesn't hold back on the technology when he draws his trimarans.

Lately I have been creating lines drawings of many of the classic sailing canoes from the late 1800's, part of my self directed apprenticeship in small craft design.

Here's page one from the Rushton Notus sailing canoe based on the Ugo. I have about 30 others in various states of completion.

    Eskimotom,

Are your planking lines developed in 3D or just illustrations?
    Nice looking drawings.

I'm not quite sure what your section view is showing on the right hand side.
