    Why would South Africans want to come here? They live in a commonwealth nation. Much simpler to move to Canada or the UK. Plus they'd get healthcare.

    Good Point.
    SA is also in the midst of a devastating drought and water shortage, particularly Cape Town.
    But why a petition on Change.org;
    A similar petition, calling on European Union President Jean-Claude Juncker, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and British Prime Minister Theresa May to allow white South Africans into EU countries, has gained nearly 17,000 signatures.
    "It is unclear where people who are signing the petitions on Change.org are based."

    South Africa is suffering a major leakage of skills, those with marketable skills are getting out as fast as they can. If you go to a dentist or doctors clinic here in NZ, one or more of the staff will be from South Africa, the supermarkets have a special section with foods from S A, there are specialist shops for them so they can get products that are familiar to them, and you'll hear their accents wherever you go. They're an asset, good people, well qualified and hard working. South Africa should in my opinion be doing their best to retain these people rather than driving them out. Zimbabwe is a classic example of what happens when the skilled people leave.

    Damn. From many angles it's very understandable. However, my wife was born in South Africa and the family farm, while unprofitable and supported by the family (who therefore subsidise the locals) is very much beloved by them. Ironically, it's a matter of public record that her family supported the anti-apartheid movement for generations; her great-uncle was one of two candidates to be the first PM of South Africa but the Colonial Secretary of the UK had the final choice, and great-uncle was seen to lean too far towards the locals. Deb's grandmother used to make tea for Joe Slovo in their house and drove Winnie Mandela around, and her grandfather being cited as a positive influence by a member of the ANC Central Committee in interviews. The farm was used to hide people from the apartheid regime and to house those who were banned. There's also a very deep attachment to the land among the family, and a very deep determination to keep on working to fix the nations issues. So the farm is owned by whites, but by anti-apartheid whites and the money sent by the expatriates helps to create work for people who would have no money if they owned the farm.

    It underlines that it's not just a rich racists - v - poor locals issue. One really worrying thing is that one of the family most prominent in the fight in recent years has decided that there is no foreseeable future for the country and has taken up a position with the UNHCR in NY. If he thinks things are hopeless, they must be really bad.

    We may have to look at sponsoring some of them to Oz.

    EDIT - Gee, there's some terrible comments underneath the Newsweek article. There are horribly racist whites, and some very savage comments towards young people who happened to be born white in South Africa as well. It's depressing to see someone of largely African American heritage saying "go back to where you came from" to a young person whose family have been in South Africa for 200 years, when such comments would be greatly offensive if directed the other way. Apartheid was terrible, but it's not the fault of those who were not born when it ended.

    Dudley is living and designing/building boats about 150 miles from here and doing very well. I know several others with boating ties who got out of SA as much as 20 years ago and came to this part of the USA. I'm sure the situation is much too complicated for any of us to make a judgement but things don't look good for many African nations. Hell, things don't look good here at home.

    This is the crux of the issue with reference to the US:

    "At first glance, that might seem like a compassionate, kind thing to do. But the language in the petition makes it clear that those petitioning want white South Africans to jump the proverbial line when it comes to immigration to the U.S., at a cost to immigrants of darker hues."

    "White South African Farmers facing genocide in their home land should be given priority as they not only face extinction in their homelands but also stand as a primary example of the kind of immigrants we would want here in our own country,” reads the petition, which adds that Boers are preferable because “they speak English and share a common ancestry and way of life as our own.”

    Should Afrikaaners be given preferential treatment, as opposed to Syrians or Somalians, Mexicans etc?

    It would certainly be illegal to give white South Africans preference over black South Africans based simply on race. I suppose we could let more South Africans come here, but most of them would be black, because most South Africans are black.

    It is not black people being threatened with having their properties expropriated without compensation, or their throats cut. If it ever comes to that (which I very much doubt, but who knows?), it is going to be somewhat of a conundrum to decide who from SA qualifies for refugee status and who not.
