He enjoyed hobnobbing with national politicians.

    Yeah, pretty creepy.

But his evil spawn is even creepier.

I never met the man, but I can't say I've ever thought much of preachers. I suppose it beats honest work, in some ways, but... how do you live with yourself?

What are you doing about it?

    George Will says . . .

He applied flattery with a trowel, comparing Dwight Eisenhower’s first foreign-policy speech to the Sermon on the Mount and calling Richard Nixon “the most able and the best trained man for the job probably in American history.” He told Nixon that God had given him, Nixon, “supernatural wisdom.” Graham should have heeded the psalmist’s warning about putting one’s faith in princes.

On February 1, 1972, unaware of Nixon’s Oval Office taping system, when Nixon ranted about how Jews “totally dominated” the media, Graham said “this stranglehold has got to be broken or this country is going down the drain.” He also told Nixon that Jews are “the ones putting out the pornographic stuff.” One can reasonably acquit Graham of anti-Semitism only by convicting him of toadying. When Graham read transcripts of Nixon conspiring to cover up crimes, Graham said that what “shook me most” was Nixon’s vulgar language.

Of the My Lai massacre of Vietnamese civilians by U.S. troops, Graham said, “we have all had our My Lais in one way or another, perhaps not with guns, but we have hurt others with a thoughtless word, an arrogant act or a selfish deed.” Speaking in the National Cathedral three days after 9/11, he said “it’s so glorious and wonderful” that the victims were in heaven and would not want to return.

He had in common with presidents the ability ( and the need) to captivate audiences with speech. Professional courtesy.

It would be a rare (as in none ever) politician that would say anything negative about Graham so I feel forced to give them a pass only on that score. That many evangelists and ministers are sincere in their beliefs is also beyond question although I know from experience that many are not and find themselves wedded to the job, just like many outside of religion.

My wife and I went to hear Graham at Fort Jackson in the 1950's just after he had returned from one of his crusades in Scandinavia. As one might expect, he had a commanding presence which probably explains his success more than what he actually had to say. Needless to say that I have long since learned to depend on my own intellect and have deliberately removed myself from all religions as much as is possible in this country.

The current fealty paid to him by our leading politicians appears to be no more than legacy insurance.

I would like to inject a small devotional here. My Step Father was born in 1907 in a sod cabin in South Dakota. His first language was German, his second Ukrainian. English was his third language. He obtained degrees in Theology, Psychology and Sociology; besides being a Methodist minister he was a Certified Family Counselor. He served in WWII as a chaplain in India. He was a humble man, and the brother of an alcoholic. He understood human frailty and did not place himself above it. He is the exemplar I would live up to.

Not all men of faith are scoundrels, as cited above. It just seems that the ones we hear about are not the ones we need.

Once, he was picked up at the airport in a limo and asked the driver if he could drive, as he had always wanted to. The driver acquiesced and the driver climbed in back and enjoyed the view through the tinted windows. Well Billy had a heavy foot and pretty soon a representative of the local constabulary pulls him over. Well he recognizes him immediately and hightails it back to his cruiser to call his lieutenant. "Sir, I think I've stopped God"
"Don't be rediculous. What makes you say that?"
"It's a limo, and Billy Graham is driving"
