Default by his own admission a complete eccentric and oddball

Simpler is better, except when complicated looks really cool.

Why would you even do that?

It seems to sail better than I thought it would, but I won't be getting one anytime soon.

Looks like he's trying to outdo Matt Layden.

They've met, and I believe that they correspond. Sven has adopted some of Matts design ideas.
I dont think that there is any attempt to "outdo" Matt at all.

Looks like a good candidate for solo circumnavigation. Wish I didn't get so seasick so easily.

    I'd add solar powered propulsion.

Now there's an idea. I wonder if anyone has circumnavigated in a solar powered boat.

At 3 minutes he appears to be close hauled. There's an Optimist ahead of him 15 degrees closer to the wind.

Is that Sven of Bris? Jebus I met him 40 years ago in St Maarten. My 21 footer was bigger than his THEN!

Yup, same guy. He's been pounding this beat for a while.

Similar to Winged Keels. No mention in the video concerning how much leeway the boat makes. Thought the first pic in the OP was Phil Bolger!

John, I met them both at the same time a few years ago. The commonality between them is, in my opinion, more apparent than real. Matt may be out of the box, so to speak, but Sven is much, much further out.

I've had the pleasure of meeting Matt, would love to have had the time and space to sit and talk a lot more than we did, and have been following Svens exploits for as long as there has been a way to do that. I like both, but agree that Sven is, shall we say, the less constrained by convention. I get a lot from his ideas but that applies to both. One of my mottoes is " only borrow the very best ideas", and both of those two are great sources of inspiration.
People who are "way out" are generally good in that respect.

Yes, many of us boat nuts have followed Sven since he busted out the wall of his mother's (I think it was) house to get the first boat out.
