Not a cruising sailboat, but a rough, tough, manly commercial fishing boat:

My BIL is a dairy farmer and is always going to auctions looking for bargains. One day he comes home with two 50 gallon drums of highway yellow paint simply because he got them for one dollar. He was going to paint some outbuildings with them until my sister stopped him.

As for boats, you can paint them any color you like as long as it's white.

For many years I did not understand why yachts (particularly plastic ones) had white decks and deckhouses. Then I had a revelation: professional sailors have it hammered into their heads that they have to keep a good lookout, despite the availability of electronic gizmos, but amateurs had no such training. So, if you paint the deck and deckhouses white, they are so dazzlingly bright in the sunlight that to ease his burning retinas, he looks at the horizon to ease the pain, thereby being forced to look where he should be looking anyways.

I am painting my Chesapeake Light Craft Expedition Wherry yellow. Not because I like it , though I do not mind the hue, but because I do not want to get run down by some power boater who is more busy with his beer than looking where he is going

Bull Moose - that's the name of the power boat that broadsided the cold molded 5.5 out of my neighborhood on the Severn River years ago and sent it to the bottom. Bull Moose. With a boat and a name like that, I have to wonder what he was compensating for?

I'm more inclined to be less noticed, but the guy is probably having the time of his life in his own creation. More power to him.

Speaking of power, looks to me to be a power boat for semi-protected waters with a sail for down wind.

    Found it...

I like yellow. The human is eye is drawn to it over other colours, probably because of some nasty stuff little critters, way back when. Having said that, battleship grey on EVERYTHING in chlorinated rubber paint, is easy to look after.....

I like my boats painted white, but one of these days, this old fart is going to get a bright red sports car!

Hey, if you're going to have a boat designed by Phil Bolger at his weirdest, you're obviously operating by the maxim 'Never begrudge the neighbors a laugh', and you should paint it any color you damn well please. Why not? In for a penny, in for a pound, eh?

How do you like my logic?

Not so much, Rich. Just a few moments perusing Pless's pron contributions uncovers an awful lot of beautiful, colorful, yachts. Besides, why would one want to live in a monochrome world?

You know me well enough to know it was just too big an opportunity to pass up. I like colors & my boat is gray - so no stones being thrown here!

How is white paint more practical, KMac?

I was just looking at a burgundy coloured Hanse a guy sailed from the UK to NZ . refreshing.
Pretty epic too , he's disabled and in a chair.

In the meantime ,we like not being white.

So, KMac, it is more practical in certain locations for boat owners who are not good at boat husbandry, then. So, can you inform us on what percentage of heat gain in the hull interior is attributable to hull surface temperature? And, in reference to your Herreshoff quote, why would he have had such antipathy towards black paint on his designs?
