No. I can't help but think it was a suicide mission on his part. Kudos for his valor.

A pilot and passenger from Australia sustained only small cuts and bruises when an elk jumped and severed the tail rotor of their helicopter Monday, Feb. 12, 2018, near Currant Creek in Wasatch County
    It's them damn Australians.

My son is the Air Force Pavehawk Flight Engineer, so more likely to be him and his PJ buddies.

One question. Was the helicopter insured by The Farmers Insurance Co?

But I couldn't see any semblance of a tail rotor in the Desert News photo or narrative.

Good eyes or a lucky shot?

Great job by the front office folks!

I guess tranquilizer darts are going out of favor. If someone asked me how to crash a helicopter I’d think trying to throw a net on an elk might be high on my list.

There's a manual for that in the army

    http://www.bladeslapper.com/m/how_to_crash.pdf,

I especially like this line as one thing to consider in practicing to be prepared to crash a helicopter,

"c. Undue concern about getting hurt in a landing or rough terrain and its adverse effect on the pilot's judgment and technique."
